bit by the bug ????????

Postby alex k » Mon Jun 25, 2012 7:28 pm

a few good yard sale finds this weekend , and i think i may be hooked .
a cooler marked 1973 for $ 10.00 ( may have paid a little too much ) and a 228 f lantern marked 10/71 for $ 2.50 . the latter is a little rough , but at that price i can try my hand at restoring it .
is this how you all got hooked ?94162941619416094159

Yep. you're in trouble now. ;)
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

The fuel cap is worth that much! Just know it is normal and expected that you find and take home at least one a week. 8)

Try here..... http://www.oldcolemanparts.com There is a forum link there as well. DO NOT go to the forum unless you have at least 4 hours of free time. You can get lost there. Tons of stove and lantern porn there. Good luck, you will need it. :worship:

Alex....think about it...so you got 12.50 into a cooler and lantern. Now go check out what the new prices are. A new steel belted Coleman will run you 100$ + and just try to find a new white gas lantern. It seems that propane is the way to go now...too bad, it sucks. White gas and it's reliability has been around for nearly 100 years. Sorry Kirk...propane is for pussies! There...I said it....someone had to!

You can pick up the parts for the lantern for maybe 8$ at the outside if it needs some. Clean them up, get a rattle can of paint and do up the lantern. Much better quality than the new stuff. For me...I see no point in buying new stuff anymore. There is so much better quality old stuff around that can be picked up for next to nothing, and can be brought back to life with a little effort. Most people see no value in the older stuff....it's "just junk in the garage" Doug

I stand by it......I've bailed out people with locked up propane canisters at 10K elevation or cold temps with a pan of hot water to set their 1# bottles in....and you get much more cooking/light out of 10$ of white gas than 10$ in propane bottles. Hey...it's a Ford Chevy thing....do what'cha want. :D

have the 425 stove and love it ( 1980 vintage ) . found a little used ( still had tyhe box )propane lantern at an estate sale last year, but like the fact that when the 228 if fixed up , i'll just have to carry one kind of fuel
and not have to throw away the propane cans .
the vintage camping stuff beings back fond memories .just wish i had gotten my fathers 1060' s stove instead of my brother ........
and i totaly agree that buying used and fixing up is very rewarding . find in most cases it's built a lot better .
wonder what my next finds will be ?????????

Heck the globe in that F is at least $10. New ones from China are more than that. I just fixed up a 220F.
{url=http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=50848] non stock F [/url]

As far as parts just replaced the fill cap gasket, the Fuel/air pick up tube and the Generator. Probably did not need to replace the last two parts but the F/A tube had a crack in it that people said probably would not bother it but the hardware store in town has new ones for $3.70. And I just had the generator anyway so I now have another old one to play with some time.

Then I worked on an E model but the font is terminal. Rest of it looks pretty good. Will pick up a font some day.

gave the lantern a good look . no pump pessure so that is the first to be changed out . local hardware store has the generator , but not the pump , so will have to wait for a run to wally world or cabellas .
in the mean time i found a 275 ( dated 12/77 ) along with an ozark trail propane lantern for $10.00 . lit right up , but globe is cracked . it's brown , so i guess thats what you call a "turd "
so i'm hooked ................
btw : will give the propane one to a friend who is just starting camping
