Help with a stove redo!

Postby Gunswinger » Sat Jul 14, 2012 6:33 pm

My neighbor has his grandfathers shanty stove and is in the process of restoring it. However he has a problem. Here are some pictures for you:
Image this is the bottom of the burner stack. It is a kerosene stove and looks like the modern kind, however when he shuts off the fuel with the red knob. The wick continues to smulder.

Image We can find no names on the thing anywhere only made in the USA on the metal and the glass tank.
What would smother the wick ? The unit will boil water in a hurry. We took a small wick from a lamp and wrapped it inside the stack to get it to burn. Could it be that we had to small of a wick? On modern heaters the wick is retacted to cause it to go out. this one has no way of doing that. Has anyone seen one like this?

While it's not the same as a stove, it's the same principal. Is the wick maybe too high up in the carrier so that it won't shut down completely? I have a number of wick type lamps, with straight wicks and circular ones like Aladdins. Too high in the carrier from the get go and they won't shut off. Just an idea. Doug

Thanks guys for the help. We got it to work but it needs the right wick. I have done some more research on the stove and found a couple like it on ebay. Boss is the name of the stove. Will let you know how it all turns out. Thanks Again. :applause:

Lehman's dose list Boss as a brand of out of production wicks that they can get. I would give them a call and talk to them directly.

What you have is commonly known as a “butterfly” stove. I have a 3 burner in my collection. Here are some links for you.
