What die to clean fuel thread?

Postby Sonoma ZR2 » Sat Jul 21, 2012 4:17 pm

I picked up a 6 60 Coleman 220E for 6 bucks @ Goodwill. Because it had the Lantern Safe on it and I found a Generator, Generator Wrench, & a couple mantles in it. I got it lit and found out the Fuel cap threads are damaged. I'm wondering how best to clean the threads up for a useable lantern instead of a display lantern? I know I need to get a new cap for it since the previous owner used a pliers to put the cap on.

I use a small stainless brush on mine no matter how bad they are rusted. If it's really rusted....soak it in some citric acid, you can pick it up in the canning area of the grocery store, then wire brush it. Use a flat mill file to clean up the top surface of the filler neck, but make sure you file it flat. I could be wrong, but I'd bet you will have a tough time with a die on those threads with the tank clearance and the price of a die isn't worth it. Founts are available easily, just pick up another if it's totalled. Doug

The threads on the fill neck are cross threaded. How best to get those cleaned up so a cap can be put on by hand and not need pliers?

Thanks this one will be a parts lantern. I've got two other 220F's, a 228H, & a 423A. Plus I'm about to bid on my Birthday Lantern. I might try to clean the threads up with a triangle file.

Small, very small triangle file and I use the awl in my Swiss pocket knife a lot for chasing threads.

What I pack

That is the knife I carry all the time. I never fly commercial. It has excellent screw drivers and I have often used the awl to mill mild steel as well as chase threads. I remove the stupid ring and file the brass boss off it to make it more pocket friendly.

Buy a thread file. I have a full set, Imperial and Metric. They are a lifesaver
