Unsecured lantern

Postby Forrest747 » Wed Aug 08, 2012 4:24 pm

Ok i took the trailer out for a spin and to take some pictures and when i got it home i realized teh lantern was not secured in fact it was left on the counter. (IM BAD). anyway the mantles are now torn to shreds and other than that it seems fine.

I do have a spot under the sink to secure it and wonder is that enough do not want to be replacing mantles every trip.

If you secure the lantern while driving you should not be replacing mantles. I have seen mantles survive in shipping . Bring it to the gathering and we can get new mantles on it.

I took just short of 20 lanterns to IRG. About half in coleman cases (all diff kinds) the other half I just kind of laid out on the bed of the tear. Not one mantle failed. They are hearty.

I also have never had a mantle tear but i don't let them bounce around. The smoothest riding spot in a trailer is about 1/2 way between the hitch point and the trailer axle. The roughest is behind the rear axle. And the further back the worse. I don't have a lot of cases/boxes for my lanterns so I wrap the better ones in old blankets or just put he in the vehicle so they are up right and can't move much.

I Hauled 57 lanterns to the IRG and had two broken mantles. But; they had hole before I left. Like Kirk said; they are pretty hardy.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

Right now the plan is in the galley under the sink. I have a 2 inch footman that I use to strap it against the wall with a mini bungee cord around the waist. So its about 2 feet behind the axel.

You can always pack your lanterns in the tow vehicle. Much smoother ride.

I have one lantern in my galley and everytime I go anywhere the mantle breaks. I would suggest not carring it in the galley/trailer.
