Coleman 286 Lamp Problem

Postby Sandyman » Thu Aug 09, 2012 7:47 pm

I have a 286 that surges or pulses after it is been running for a short time. :x I pump up the pressure and the pulsing decreases but soon comes back. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it. The lantern is about 3 years old and has not been used all that often (4 or 5 trips). Any help would be appreciated.

While I am not familiar with the 286 plussing seems to be caused by, Too small Mantle, Fuel pick up tube spring needs streached. ( doubt that on a lantern that young but who knows. ) Or have you ckecked that the fuel cap is sealing?

Or you might have a lantern that is often referred to as a "Disco" lantern.

Might be the generator.

On that model I'd guess generator first. Try cycling the valve all the way open and shut several times, see if that helps (doing this works the tip cleaner up and down). 286's are a later model and usually nice and easy to use. You can also see if your fuel cap is sealing well with a little soapy water around it. If it's loosing pressure that could also cause an issue.

I agree with what HighDesert said, sounds like you have a bad generator.
Also, Make sure that the lantern has plenty of fuel.
