Hey Kevin....got a Sunbeam T9!

Postby doug hodder » Mon Sep 03, 2012 7:06 pm

While it's not exactly camping equipment...oh well, it could be if you had hook ups. I was wandering around a flea market today...and found this sunbeam T9 toaster. They were made from '39-late 40's. This one is mid-40's based on patent info stamped on it. Chrome body, bakelite handles/base, original cord, can either pop up toast or hold it warm. This was referred to as the "Worlds Fair" toaster as it used the logo from the 1939 NY Worlds Fair in the incised pattern on it. Makes toast in 1:18 sec...as opposed to the piece of crap that I currently have at 3:10 sec...and it takes another part cycle to get it where I like it. Cool little light on the side also lights up when it's working. The drawback....sides get hot so watch bread bags on it!

I hit it with some OOOO steel wool on the chrome, and some denatured alcohol to clean up the previous years of "toasting" history. Blew it out...plugged it in and voila....runs great! I had an old one similar to this before that was my grandmothers, but my ex-wife decided that it was "too old" and gave it away. Ahhhhh finally...a toaster with some style/ design/ and makes great toast! Not bad for a 68 year old toaster. Original price was about 8$ I think, I'm it it for 40 but I've spent more than that over the years on pieces of junk that quit, restored...they are 375$ on the toaster sites. Doug

I thought you were talking about a Sunbeam Tiger. A little disappointed when I saw the pics.

Hey Doug, AWESOME score. I'd love to find one of those. That's the model toaster that inspired the Flying Toaster screensaver from years past...

Kirk....there are some awesome deco styled toasters out there, back when typical things in the kitchen had some design to them....gotta find some older ones. The reason I post this for Kevin....he's got toasters too! I'm only wanting Deco ones though. Kev, has a bunch. Doug

Why is there always a setting on a toaster that will turn bread into charcoal?

Over on the Coleman forum there is a Flashlight Friday thread. Maybe a Toaster Tuesday would be cool over here.

Well, that toast looks good to me. My grandmother's toaster would hang up and produce charcoal about every third time you used it regardless of the setting. Grandma, not being one to waste anything, would just scrape it off and butter it up. Guess how I like my toast. I always lament the fact that no matter how dark you set the toaster for, it doesn;t get dark enough.

Them toasters often did double duty - they make toast and also served as a makeshift mirror! :NC cool find
now if you wan to change toast into charcoal - you'll need this toaster:

That's a cool toaster Scott! I have a plastic thing called "Holy Toast". You mash it into the bread and it stamps the bread with an outline of Jesus...then toast it. Not as nice of a graphic like this one puts out though! Doug

My mother, sweet as she was, wasn't much of a cook. My brothers and I were well into our 30s when we discovered that most folks don't burn their toast and then scrape off the char until the desired degree of doneness was achieved. In retrospect it was a bit more work but you never had to run the toast through another part cycle to get the desired doneness.
