Coleman Catalytic heaters?

Postby TRP » Tue Oct 02, 2012 1:02 pm

hey Gang,

What's the scoop on those Coleman Catalytic heaters I see pop up on craigslist all the time. It seems like they might be handy for situations were campfires are not allowed. Do any of you guys use them? Worth picking up if a guy can find one at the right price?

Thanks
Ted

Even with the Coleman crowd...they're not really sought after, you'd probably be better off with a fake propane campfire. In fact, at a Coleman gathering, one of them was being passed around and no one wanted to be the one caught hauling it home. It was in good shape too! Dave A got stuck with it. If you want one...don't pay for it, I'm sure you can find someone willing to give one away. If Dave still has the one he ended up with...I'd be willing to bet he'd just give it to you. Doug

Ha! I like the idea of a fake propane campfire.

We have this Treasure Island meet and great coming up. Without a campfire it may be pretty cold with that fog and wind off the bay. I'm not in a hurry to pick up more stuff, I just thought they were interesting looking and was wondering why you never see anyone talking about them.

Thanks for the info.

I have one of the catalytics. Doug is right. Puts out very little heat.

I would lean towards one of the propane catalytics since I had a White gas one almost put my lights out permanently in my old Scotty Sportsman (with the windows and vent cracked). Keep windows open irregardless of what you use..

I'd never use any sort of gas heater IN the teardrop. Yikes.

I was just thinking about something to keep the feet warm when you're someplace where you can't use a campfire.

Glad you're okay.

Actually there has been quite a bit of talk about them recently. I had a thread in early august talking about recommendations. There were quite a few at IRG and a number of folks, including us, picked up one since then. We had 5 different kinds at the unionville gather last month. I had planned to bring ours to the treasure island thing until i heard about no bbq or campfires. I can understand they don't want it in any way to resemble an occupy thing. The campfires are really nice and do put out some heat. The also can use up propane pretty quickly.
