AFC Gasoline Lantern

Postby D.J. » Tue Dec 03, 2013 5:47 pm

If you live long enough the stuff that you buy will eventually become antiques. The trouble with that is, not all antiques are worth owning. I bought this AFC gasoline lantern in the mid 70s, at Gambles, for $24.95. I thought that there was always going to be gas handy. The trouble was that the lantern was and is finicky. I didn’t realize until much later that the lamp needs pre-heating to light properly. The flaring was so bad without pre-heating that the lantern was both embarrassing and dangerous to use. It would belch foot high flames for up to 5 minutes and soot up the globe almost instantly. It was and is a pain to use. You have to remove the globe to pre-heat or to wait until it is running well before you put the globe back on to prevent sooting up. Once it is running, it has adequate light. I do have a new generator for it. Maybe that will help the problem. I watch eBay to see what they go for. It seems that they don’t go. They end up with no bids. Has anyone here had any success with the AFC lantern?

This is weird!!! Just a couple days ago I took this Ashflash off the shelf to see if it would burn. I traded for it last year. I did need to put a globe in it but it lite right up and burns strong. Maybe you just need to exercise it some. I am not positive, but I was told these were a Japanese copy of a Coleman.

I did use Coleman fuel, not gasoline. Don't know if that would make a difference, but a good idea, worth trying.

Is it safe to do so? I have no experience with this. D.J.

To me it sounds like the pickup tube is not working properly. Specifically the air hole plugged up. I am pretty sure the same tear downs and trouble shooting for a Coleman 200 would work just fine.

I bought an AFC once at the fleamarket, it was too rough to ever get going. I have heard over the past couple of years that they normally work ok.

I would gladly trade for a nice little Coleman 200 but the shipping costs would probably quash the deal. .... D.J.
