when you go camping how many lanterns should you take?

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Depends on where I'm camping. If its in a sardine can of a State Park then I'll only take one or two. But if I'm boondocking with a big group of friends in the middle of the forest then I'll sometimes take 10. None of mine are shelf queens, so they all make it through the rotation (as long as I've had time to clean and rebuild). My oldest (1929 Quicklite) is still in line for a rebuild, so that one hasn't made it out yet.

Kinda like an antique car - if you don't drive it, whats the point of having it? Sure it looks nice in the garage, but its the experience of using it that makes it fun.

I think two would be a minimum: one for the table and one to carry around to where it is needed.

I suppose with modern head lamps and an LED galley light, you could probably get by with just one, but it is nice to have a backup. I'm with Zach, too; they should be exercised.

On the trip to Poet Creek I will definitely bring the 275 turd, that's my most reliable "worker". I'd also like to go through Peppermint Patty (200A) and get her sorted out (she spits fire out of every orifice). I might bring the 228E, too.

I guess it all depends on if I get some storage boxes built and have a place to put everything when the camper is done.

We use old style kerosine lanterns filled with citronella oil, so we bring at least 6, if not a dozen. I like the light a lot better, they don't hiss, and they keep the bugs away too :)

Two. One for the picnic table and one for the tree hanger. I do rotate them also. I'm weird and keep track of what lantern went on each trip and if it has any issues that I need to fix for next time. Weird I know.

The further I go, the fewer I take. Most often I only take one. Sometimes I take 2 adjustable lantern. Those are nice to show some light but not blind anyone. Many times I buy lanterns while I am out camping. Then I try to get them to burn while I sit around the picnic table.

Off topic question, but: I have a Dietz, how well does citronella oil in them keep the bugs away?

I'm basically a Kerosene guy and I have a box that holds 4 Dietz Junior Lanterns that I always bring.

I very seldom burn all 4 at once, most times 2 at either end of the picnic table.

I always burn Charcoal lighter fuel in them as it is brighter, cleaner, more readily available and comes in its own safe storage container.

Citronella oil will work and keep bugs away, but buy yourself some extra wicks as Citronella really gums things up...so does Kerosene for that matter.

I have a LOT of Lanterns!

Charcoal lighter fluid? I always learn something new here. I would have thought that to be very dangerous.

I think I am going to have to get em a Coleman lantern now, preferably my birthday if I can.

I put the 2 Dietz's in the screenhouse for ambient evening light. Seems to keep most of the lil buggers at bay.. :D

At least 2 gpa's, never know when one of them will have a hissy fit. But I usually take at least 3. Been thinking about adding a wicky to the mix. Those Dietz Juniors sound pretty good.

The last couple camp outs it has been 2. -But that's probably because I only owned 2 at the time. Now that I have restored a few more I might take 3 or 4.

A little of topic but we got a set of battery powered LED candles for Christmas. At first I thought they were pretty cheesy but after lighting them up my wife and I really like them. They look like the real thing and you don't have to worry about the candles burning down and creating a fire hazard. They can be set on a 4 or 8 hour run time and shut off automatically. I'm thinking one lantern and a couple candles on the campsite would look good.

Interesting idea, I have never seen those in person yet.

We camped with a group this past summer in Colorado. There was a fire ban. One of the girls had 3 of those battery flicker candles. If you cluster them together and place your chairs in a circle around them, and squint just a little, they make a nice little camp fire under difficult circumstances.
