The Mick'en Coop

Postby 39Ratrod » Thu Feb 19, 2015 9:17 am

I figure since my name is Mick I should call it something clever. Everyone has the coolest names for their campers so I tried to come up with one as well. I was thinking about the chicken coop I recently built, and thought hey! the Mick'en Coop! Or the Mick Mansion, the Mick Double 'cause it sleeps 2, or the Mick Nugget....lol.

Here's the chicken coop. We are big fans of TREMORS if you couldn't tell.

The start of the Mick'en Coop.

The camper is being built as a slide in for our 5x7 utility trailer. The design has a full 8" basement to get over the rails of the trailer. It's 2x8's on edge and a 2x6 layed flat across the top top give a 5'8"ish width.

I drew out several wall templates before I settled on this shape. I love it! I guess it's a fastback Grasshopper. The door openings are a bit exaggerated, but I want egress to be easy, not a pain. I also wanted to be able to sit in the opening and drink coffee, beer, play guitar, etc.
Image

The plan is to have a round window in the door, possibly a wide window across the front, a roof vent, maybe some side windows for cross breeze, and a galley if I can do it. I am a diesel mechanic, not a carpenter. My hats off to all the cabinet maker types out there. Your builds are remarkable.

I like your design as it happens to be the same one I used !! I used a trailer with sides as well and took advantage of the space as a basement too. Yours looks great!! The first Tremors movie was the best in the series as far as I'm concerned!!

Thanks for the comment! I like most all the Tremors series, with 3 being my least favorite. Burt has some great lines in the second one and the wild west prequel #4 is pretty good too. I guess they are wrapping up filming of #5 as we speak. It was shot in Africa.

I'm going to check your build out, hope you have it posted.

Got some of the framework done tonight. I also scored a sweet piece of plywood from work today. It's super thick, 11+ layers and has a finished side to it. Looks like something used in cabinet making. It was the skid for a Peterbuilt radiator. It will be the bulk of the doors. Anyway here's some progress.

Freezing cold a snowing sideways out today. No sense even trying to warm the shop up so I thought about what I wanted for outside lights. I had all these light socket from vehicles knowing one day I'd do something with them. Well now I did. I used some mason jars and cut the lids out to match the sockets. They look great when lit up.

Sounds good! Just need the temps to be in the 30's so the woodstove in the shop can make it bearable. Once the outside is done, a space heater on the inside and I can work in comfort!

Made some progress over the last couple days. Still very cold out, but oh well.

Got the front wall covered.

Found the glass for the round windows. A couple of PYREX pie thingys should do the trick.

Wall cut out and inner flange made.

Worked on the insulation a bit.

That is such a great idea group! However, be careful with the pyrex. It can handle heat/cold, but it will shatter and when it does it goes into lots of shards. Don't think I'd want it on a window. Just my two cents.

The name and design is great! I love the lighting ideas!

Thanks for the warning on the pyrex. I'll keep my eye on them. I went to the dollar store hoping to score some glass dinner plates, but no luck. Used square dinner plates in the chicken coop, they have made it through a summer and a winter season. But they are not pyrex.

Thanks again for the warning and your comment!
