I just went out and measured mine. It is now 13 inches. I have had a 2" memory foam in it and can't remember having problems with that. So 14 inches would probably work for most folk. Even down to 12 inches as long as your now to frisky in there.

On my build, I put the rear cabinets about 1-1/2" "aft" of the door.
The door I placed at the same spot that I would sit up and swing my legs in my bed at home.
So I don't know off the top of my head how far they are...everything is flowing backwards from the head.
The rear cabinet being "right there" at the door lets us sit in the door and grab socks and things like that.
We can also grab stuff out of the cabinets when we are standing outside.
I think the biggest thing would be claustrophobia.....how much room do you need to not feel closed in?

woops, didn't read the question correctly. My shelves are about 12 inches deep so they are a bit rearward of the door. Which is filled a bit with curtain rod, light switch, 12v plug ( which i will never put to the rear of the door again ) Makes for more room inside for when I am couped up in there on a stormy day/night. Does make it a bit harder to get to the cabinets while standing outside. But now I can stand inside as you saw last year.

Happy building

Sam,

I'll measure mine tonight. I think I have about 20" from the top of the floor to the bottom of the cabinets. The mattress we will be using is 6" thick, so that leaves about 14" clearance.

There are three things, that I can think of, that come into play as to how far the cabinets project from the galley bulkhead. First, you want to leave room for your nears when you bend your legs and pull your feet toward you. Second, when you sit up, you need to at a minimum not smack your face into the cabinets, but you probably need a little more clearance room for comfort. Third, you don't want your cabinets projecting into your vent fan. (Don't forget the depth of the valance or trim around the vent fan.)

In my teardrop, the first and the third things were the controlling factor.

Take care,
Tom

Is it just me, or does the door look to be a little far forward on the bed. Might make it hard to exit. Just a thought.

Nice work!

Really diggin' the basement idea! I planned to build mine like a cab-over tractor trailer truck... using the correct weight distribution and pivot point, the whole cab could be pivotted up to access the 'basement' area. The lower deck would be for stuff that is taken out when getting to the campsite, like firewood, camp chairs, etc (or my off-road tires). I'm really interested in watching your build to see how things go with 13" extra space below.

Hi Sam,

I really like your build so far, the fenders are very well thought out and executed.:applause: I see a hand tap in the one photo, you're not hand tapping everything are you? I'm real curious about your shocks, I'm thinking about following your lead so lead on. The other thing I'm watching closely is how you hang your drawers, what kind of drawer guides? How do you weather proof the ones in front? Your metal skills look great and I'm sure to learn from you.

Good luck.

Terry :D
