UPDATE: trailer paint prep

I've just been working way with the wire wheel, started with a brass wheel so as to work the rust off preserving the current paint. Plan on then hitting it with some good rust primer. In some areas I used a steel wire brush and got down to shiny metal wiping out paint and all. Not sure I have the time to commit to wheeling the whole thing down to shiny metal. The rust is really not that bad at all, but my perfectionist side is iching to pull every bolt and remove all the old paint... OVERKILL I am sure of it.

UPDATE: Wire brushing and floor framing plan.

So I was hoping you folks would take a look at the plan I've drawn up for the floor framing. I plan on cutting treated 2x4's in half and using those 2x2's for a 4x8 floor frame topped with a 1/2 or 3/4 treated ply. The image below is my basic idea. I was hoping to attache that to the frame of the trailer with lag bolts from metal trailer frame up into the pre-drilled 2x2's. I'm open to ideas. There will be a notched 4x4 at the top to support the forward most corners of the walls. The tongue will slid into the notch and be fastened with bolts.

looks like you are having fun with your design

have you considered the clearance issue with the front corners of the box and the tail lights on the TV?

IMHO you should be able to jack knife the trailer w/o tagging the TV with the box corners

just this old man's 2¢ worth

The tongue on this trailer is very long (7"?), but no I had not considered it! I think your right and I'll have the clearance. However you mentioned tail lights and that made me consider the trailer tail lights. In the second design they will be beneath the camper and most likely partially obscured. I'll work on that. Thank you for the thought.

UPDATE: Sub-floor

With weather in the 40s I turned my attention to working on the sub-floor and frame. I ripped 4 2x4s and then cut them to size for the sub-floor frame. I then cut the 4x4 I had lying around to length and worked on notching out the space for the trailer tongue and also for the frame to rest on. I think this is more than enough to support the front two corners that would have gone unsupported by trailer frame.

How to fasten the 2x2's and create the frame?

Glue and Pocket holes? I've got the Kreg jig equip.
Glue and screw (from outside in)
    Framing Nails (from outside in)

UPDATE: Sub-floor build

I'm an educator and we had a snow day yesterday. Despite my kids also having a snow day I found a lot of time to work on getting the trailer deck put together! Penny was pleased.
153491

I dry fit all the pieced together and decided to go with pocket hole construction (I mean I bought the damn jig, might as well use it). It came together quickly. My cuts were accurate and after fussing over it for a while, I got to screwing and gluing.
153492

I'm pleased with the end result of the floor frame. It's going to suit it's purpose. It fit perfectly on the 4x8 that I'll affix to it in short order.
153495 153494 153493

And of course I had to see it on the trailer before I went to bed so I broke down my table and set it up. I was pleased that it all fit well.
153498 153496

I was disappointed that the spacing around the wheel well was not even. I'll add some blocking to even it out but, HELL, it fit.

UPDATE: Blocking and sub-floor

So got a minute or two outside today and was able to fix the uneven spacing around the fenders. 3 kids and a puppy keep me busy and lazy at night. :?

153512 153513

I was also able to fasten the frame to the notched 4x4 that will support the forward most corners.

UPDATE: Sub-floor complete

Found an hour or two and was able to fasten a 1/2 inch of plywood to the floor frame. Used liquid nails and 1 1/2 inch screws. I was on my own so I clamped a board to the edge of the frame and propped the plywood up and against the board. I put the adhesive down then lowered the plywood upon it.

153523 153524

After in place, I put the screws in around the edges at each cross brace and same down the middle.

153525

I still had a couple minutes so I cut out the space for the top of the wheel fenders.

How many bolt points? I'm leaning toward 6 not including a u-bolt holding down the 4x4.

I did 10 to be safe also I gorilla glue the carriage bolts to the wood so that they don't turn, lock washers, and loctite the nuts. Overkill perhaps but my mind felt at ease after. Stainless steel everything.

UPDATE: Sealing Sub-floor Undercarriage

Hello folks after working 12 hours on Monday I came home exhausted with ZERO intention of doing anything with the trailer. However, following a heated argument I suddenly had the energy and motivation to be in my garage in the 25 degree weather. :x

After snapping the flimsy home depot paint stick I took a big honkin peace of wood to mix up the Henry Fibered Black Roof Coating. In 25 degree weather viscosity was LOW and it was some tough sledding. Even with the heater on and the bucket near the warmth it was like painting with... with... It wasn't like painting at all! This stuff clearly isn't paint. I used a ladle and an ancient paint brush to swab it around. :?

After an hour and a half I had it well covered. Tonight I'll touch up any crevassas I may have missed. Does this stuff stay tacky or does it cure dry eventually (I hope)???

UPDATE: Trailer Painting

The weather was warm enough last weekend and so I was able to get bottom and sides of the trailer painted. While I have it upside down, I plan on installing the hubs, wheels and tires in short order. Then flip it right way up and finish the paint job.
