I wasn't too sure about the "bubble-wrap" radiant barrier insulation, so this was a test to see if it works. So far it does seem to buffer the temperatures in our garage. When the cold weather hit recently (or "cool" to everyone north of the Red River) the garage was warmer than outside.

I think this stuff needs an air space to be effective.

It's just a regular ole Bessey bar clamp. There's a better picture of a couple of them below. To layout the curve of the teardrop profile, I stuck wood blocking to plywood with double-stick carpet tape. Then I curved the batten around to the blocking and held it to the blocking with the clamp. Once I was happy with the curve, I traced a line along the batten.

Some Progress

:D Finally got around to making sawdust. Here's the template for the profile:

And here it is with some holes in it:

:worship: Aargh! Now time to cut the door opening. I hope my jury-rigged router/compass creation works:

So far so good.

It's no Powermatic or Unisaw, but I've been real happy with it. A few years back, Sears had it on sale, and at the same time that there was a Craftsman Club coupon that you could "stack" on top of the discount. Out the door, it was $679.

Thanks for the compliments on the teardrop.

:applause: Had some garage time today. For the most part, I am using Grant's plywood wall construction method. The only difference is that I am using a 1/4" mdf template for layout and final fitting. Here is a piece of plywood (actually it is 3/4" mdo) with the template on top. Next step is to trace the profile and "lightening holes."

Image

The outside profile is cut and now onto making plywood swiss cheese.

One down, one more to go.

Finally got back to some construction, but not a whole lot to show. (By the way, the CFO exercised her naming rights and has named our teardrop "Silver Beatle" as a tribute to our all-time favorite rock group.)

Door openings were routed in the plywood wall framing and "mortises" routed for mortise locksets. (The mortise will be formed by the interior wall skin.)

Image

I then constructed some boxes for in-floor storage. (And now know why many say don't bother - a whole lot of work for not much storage.)

Image

Next on the list was to cut the framing for the insulated floor. I didn't get the floor built as I had planned, but everything is sitting on the plywood cart ready for assembly hopefully next weekend.

some more progress

Postby aggie79 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 11:19 pm

It seems like I only get in the garage every other weekend. After wasting time building floor storage boxes, I nixed that idea and started on the floor.

Image

The intial framing passes inspection.

Framing finished.

Insulating the voids.
