Re: The Charley Project 0324 The builder is High

Even with the garage door open and the vent fan on, I am high!

I mixed three 12oz batches of CPES and completed the roof the upper front area and the roof to wall edges. I am taking a break.

Used a 1/4" nap nine inch roller and tilted the trailer down to its lowest point in the front and I also took the wheels off to allow me to patch and CPES under the wheel well.

Any how tilted it, and poured from teh high poinnt and let it run to the front about every 2 feet the flow would slow and i would spread it out a little more thinner. at the front i poured and let it flow over the edge and then spreaded it out once it got to the seam.

i was suprised at how thin it was i really was expecting syrup viscosity, but it really was almost as thick as water. i hoped i mixed it right one to one it said.

Update two hours later. got some fresh air and made a 20 oz batch and brushed it on the side and touched up some missed spots. pink elephants dancing dont worry just kids watching fantasia.

I know the feeling...I used to build models in my room. One summer day, my room's wall a/c unit quit blowing cold air and I didn't even notice it. My mother opened the door and was astonished by the heat and glue fumes. I can't wait to poly the inside of my trailer...ha,ha!

Yes, CPES is runny and, therefore, goes on thin. If you can, put on more than one coat. It soaks in. In my opinion, three is usually good; and, if you have enough on, it should shine a bit when it is dry. Always have a source of fresh air coming in and circulating. I either worked outside or had a large box fan working. The chemicals in a spray can of Spar Varnish got to me worse. I saw stars with the canned stuff!

I totally agree about not doing it indoors. I had the exhaust fan going and the garage door open and the back door open. Should have put a few more fans but hey its done. I bought the 1/2 gallon mix and its almost gone. Have enough for when I take the fenders off. Good to know its runny

Well i got my REI dividend and had to go and spend it. So the wife got some rocking sunglasses and a water bottle and I got a few things for Charley. I got an awesome emergency radio from the American Red Cross and a weather temp station. figure can put the outdoor sensor in the galley or in the tongue box if i ever get that done. Also sink is in although not glued in still plan on the tiles.898878988689885

Zach they had several types there and this one just had it all. You can charge a cell phone had the lights and the weather radio, solar or crank. Several years ago in Colorado a campsite was flooded and killed a whole bunch and no one had a radio or that the signal didnt get to them. better to have something and it didnt cost me anything.

Its been 5 days and teh garage still reaks of the CPES.

Re: The Charley Project 040312 Hinge Question

Postby Forrest747 » Tue Apr 03, 2012 11:14 am

Took the wheels and fenders off to do some prep work underneath them. I also have a hinge question. I want to use Jeep hood hinges, to keep with the Jeep theme and wonder if they will work or do i need to go more conventional with a hurricane hinge and have the hood hinge as decrotive.

I think the Jeep hinges will work fine so long as you have enough solid blocking and/or spar material to screw them into. You will also need to think about how you want to seal the hinge line; perhaps a strip of pond liner (EPDM rubber) tacked down to both sides temporarily, then the Jeep hinges bolted down on top of that, then aluminum strips everywhere that the Jeep hinges aren't to permanently hold the rubber in place.

You would get the look of the Jeep hinges with the full length weather proofing of the rubber strip/hinge.

Re: The Charley Project 040612 Hating Fiberglass

Postby Forrest747 » Fri Apr 06, 2012 9:24 pm

My first attempt at fiberglass tape is a disater. the epoxy i used was a set up epoxy lamenating from teh rot doctor. it was thick and i cut the 3 inch fiberglass tape to length and attempted to spread it with a squeege. did not work out for me. so i took the epoxy and then just spread it onto the seam of the roof and hope that it helps. i cant imagine it hurting with sealing the seam maybe the paint will still stick on it. this scared me and i that is justified i guess.

after some reading and alot of great advice i figured a way to do the tape. I mixed teh epoxy in a one gallon ziplock bag then added the tape and kneaded till throughly wet. then i put it on teh roof to wall seam and spread out using my gloved hands, working from teh center of the radius and working to the edge of the tape and did this back and forth till i felt good about it. while it is curing i did some more epoxy filler to the verticle edges and scrapes and scratches. had a thought of heresy i was thinking ok its not museum quality and im taking my time to make the best trailer i can. then i though what if i dont want to take it out camping because it will get exposed to all sorts of stuff and one day it will be ruined. then my 9 year old slapped me and said more work less doddling.

I am not yet brave enough to even try epoxy and fiberglass so, to me, you are the man. I think I like the way your 9 year old thinks. :FNP

Frank I am feeling better about it, but still i have no clue if what i am doing will help or how it will look we shall see.

Its amazing what kids pick up and stick with. Her mom use to say to the kids Stop doddeling and go and do something. Its amazing the attitude that little girl has, we lost her mom and then i had my accident and every day that girl made me a menu to let me know what food we were having that day. no finer 5 star establishment than hers.

Well after several failed attempts at putting a cabinet door from scratch i had a moment of clarity. what would norm abrahms do?
so i took some 2X1 poplar and routed out a 1/4 inch channel and then sput some splines in it. clamped together and seems to be a better way of doing it. will cut the excess and then sand and paint. I then cut up some 2X4's for the hatch and got it dry fitted clamped and then screwed and glued it all together.
