Good thing you're only wanting to pull a tear with it, unlike this poor fella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAfZ1N56qjY

So your wifes not convinced yet? Let her do some (ok, most)(who am I kiddin' ... all) of the decorating inside. Mine was a little skeptical at first, but then she went nuts with it. I'm wondering if I should have built a 7x15 instead of a 5x9 to accomidate all the "accessories" she got? It all started with the "outdoorsy" curtain material she found at Goodwill, then pretty well exploded from there. She justifies the wall stuff because it has a hook of some sort on it so we can hang clothes, hats, towels,... (we don't even where hats!) Now she can't wait for ME to get it finished so SHE can take a vacation.

Build's lookin' good, and good luck getting your wife involved. Hey, last vacation we spent sleeping in the back of a mini van, didn't take much convincing after that. We also agreed on the convenience of "just pull off the road, get out, walk back, get in, go to sleep". That Simple.

Thanks for the cool pics and sites Mezmo and Danny. And Thank you Whitney for the advise on decoration. It is true she is helping decorate and it has brought her in. She is looking forward to camping in it now. Today I got the sink plumbed and she thought that was cool. Thanks everyone for your time to read my build.

When they (better halfs) get to start decorating they do get into it. Mine has even started trying to get me to change the color I was going to paint it to match a color scheme she likes and has a favorit color of mine. It's cool she is getting excited about it and camping, so you can say she is "Sold" on it now .

It's getting to the good parts now! Once the camp trailer takes its shape, it starts to feel like you're getting close to done, even though the devil is sometimes in the details. :applause:

And if the wife's not sold yet, consider lowering the asking price.

I got a skin on the hatch. I used 1/4 birch. Only two ribs, but they are beefy ribs. As of now I am reporting no spring back. The hatch was a tough bend for 1/4 birch. I used wet towels to soften the ply. Several people (including Grant Whipp) told me to use two plys of 1/8 and I agree it would have been better but I did not want to do it twice.

Thanks Kent. The things I thought about before I skinned. - If I were to use 1/8 twice it would be difficult or impossible to use screws. If I did figure out how to use screws on the first layer how do you avoid hitting them on the second? I do not own 45 clamps like all of you do. When does spring back happen. Now , two weeks from now, 6 months from now? And a final thought - I could have doubled the end plywood ribs. This would have been easy and made spring back a non issue. Hindsight you know.

Oh yea the best part is that it fits perfect.

Use screws as clamps until the glue dries. Take the screws out and use them again on the second piece until that glue dries. Then take them out, fill the holes, and paint.

What cliff says! Nice looking hatch by the way... :applause:  You have conquered the dreaded hatch, feared by all first timers..lol.. Actually, you will find the door to be more a pain in the back than the hatch..

Thanks for the info Cliff. You are right Danny, the doors are going to be a challenge. They are next.

Kirk,

The hatch looks great! I bet bending that 1/4" ply was a bear, but you did a great job on it.

Take care,
Tom
