You're lucky that the fiberglass in is good shape. The old Chinook small truck slide-in I started this on had lots of cracks where the bottom had been abused and getting the glued-on shag carpet out was a bit difficult.

I gave up on it after a while and I ended up taking a loss on it but think I passed it on to a young couple who could enjoy it.

You've definitely been quite busy on yours! Just a little longer and you'll have it completely apart, can check out the frame and give it a cleanup and R&R and start putting it back together.

I look forward to seeing the build.

Of course, I'd also enjoy seeing a teardrop build too. It's why I come here, lots of pictures to look at and wish I had the money to start on mine.

It seems to want to be an Airstream but it's fiberglass, not shiny aluminum.
Ugly cousin for sure but I was never fond of the look of the Airstream either.

This is just me talking here, and I'm nobody of any consequence, but I got some advice from a friend of mine when I was talking about wanting to build 3 different trailers at the same time. I guess I was trying to justify owning that many recreation trailers, when he looked at me and said, "You know, there's no limit on the number of toys you're allowed to own. If you want them, build them." It was really a shave-my-beard-and-call-me-normal moment. Why didn't I think of that?

Basically, I don't see it as an either/or proposition. If you want to build the tear and restore the Boler, go for it. I know - money, time, focus, yada yada yada... I have the same thing going on here. Oh well - I'm under no deadline, and I no longer have any plans to be able to camp any of them any time soon. So, I've started one trailer and am getting ready to start another. We tent camp now, and will camp whichever camper I get done first when it's ready.

It's all part of being on teardrop time to me. Just my 2¢.

We're off tomorrow for Rosh Hoshana. My plan for the day, finish painting my teardrop frame and possibly go to Annapolis for the plywood for my floor and walls. My Fantastic Fan arrived yesterday and my stash of equipment for the tear is shaping up nicely. Now I don't know what to do next because I have a 1972 Boler sitting in my backyard, and it is in serious need of major attention.

OK Becky, I'm gonna blame this on you.

I saw your post and just *casually* entered "boler for sale" in Google...

came upon a "Fiberglass-4-Sale" website...

thought to myself "I wonder if there are any for sale in Minnesota?"...

and two days later, towed this home...

I paid significantly more than you, but it's in excellent condition for an 84 Scamp. The only thing that needs replacing is one side marker light bulb and the two old-style propane tanks when they run out of fuel. I figure I can use this until I get the Lily Pad finished, then sell it.

This is all your fault you know. ;)

Oh Lil, I am so sorry. I didn't know it was contagious or I would have been more careful about exposing others. I hope you enjoy your Scamp!!

Actually, I'm eternally grateful to you that I acted on my impulse.

Have fun bringing the little Boler back to its proper state of happiness, and getting to camp in it out of the elements.

Take care,

We have decided not to keep the boler after all. It was an impulse buy for Lance, but not really what we need or want. Now that it is all cleaned out, as soon as we have properly transferred the title we are going to list it for sale on eBay and I am getting back on track with my teardrop build. Yay!!! I am so happy.

I feel like this build thread has been somewhat sidetracked, my fault for posting the boler on it. So I probably will start another one, just to keep it clean, and devoted to the teardrop.

No need to start a new thread.
I think we all can relate to having changes of plan right in our build threads and it's interesting to see what we do along the way.

Started making sawdust finally

Postby Oldragbaggers » Sun Oct 09, 2011 7:48 pm

Three days of beautiful weather, and don't know how long it's going to last, so I figured I'd take a vacation day on Friday and see what I could get accomplished.

Friday morning I finished up the painting on the frame. It turned out great and is just perfect for what we want. I will be replacing the axle and maybe the tongue jack but other than that, she's good to go.

Image

After I got my last coat of paint on, I headed out on a materials expedition. I had to make a trip to Annapolis for the 5x5 sheets of Baltic Birch ply for the floor. I really love lumber, everything about the smells and the feel of it, so I had to spend some time wandering around in the lumber shop. Then to Lowe's for insulation, glue, screws and the rest.

Saturday and today I worked on the floor, amid a million other distractions. If only I had a woodshop (and nothing else to do except work on the teardrop). But I don't, so the tools get dragged out of the garage as I need them and then dragged back in again. I'm hoping to find a solution to that before the bad weather gets here so I can work through the winter.

Image

But the floor is mostly put together. After this picture was taken we dragged it into the garage and I glued it up and put the screws in. I used 1/2" Birch ply with 1x3 Poplar framing. I will insulate with the 3/4" pink stuff. I am closing up the bottom with 1/8" birch ply, covered with a layer of fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin and then the black goo. That should close it all up tight, protect the insulation from the road junk and make it nice and waterproof.

I am excruciatingly slow. Always have been. They say measure twice, cut once. I measure 4 or 5 times and then cut real slow. I will give Aggie Tom a run for his money I bet you as far as time taken to build.

Oh well, the doing is so much fun and now I can actually say "I'm building a teardrop!!"

Becky

I believe you made the right choice to build your teardrop instead of restoring an older camper. Sure you can get alot of satisfaction out of a restoration project but you would get alot more satisfaction out of something that you designed and built yourself.

Becky,

You are already moving at a much faster pace than I am. Plus, it looks like you know what you are doing!

Great beginnings on your new teardrop. Keep the sawdust coming!

Take care,
Tom
