Clint,

That's a good looking frame you have there and an even better looking helper. I wish I had done something like a teardrop when our kids were little.

Good use with the templates. It is a lot cheaper to cut some masonite or mdf to figure out how things work instead of cutting plywood. Can't wait to see the walls stood up.

Take care,
Tom

Thank you Tom.

I love working with kids on the project. They have a lot of fun helping build it.

Well I have finished framing one wall and I had to stand it up to see what it would look like. I know it is on the wrong side but it looks good.

Got a little bit more done today. I have been gluing everything with the PL Premium construction adhesive and TB3. Using a bottom bearing 1/2" router bit to get it to shape. Used 1/4" bolts through the bottom of the wood frame and the metal tabs welded to the trailer. The other wall is weighted down and drying. Maybe tomorrow it will find its home.

Did some more today. Got the other wall up and started on the full size bed. Had to take a brace off and that will remind you just how strong and tuff glueing things together is. It is amazing how strong that makes things. As you build things and attach them to the walls it is making the whole thing feel strong.

Little more done today. Went to church and then a potluck. Love spending time with friends. Dad and I got the first pice of ceiling on. Using 1/4 BC exterior plywood and it bends like a dream and of coarse PL Premium. Here are a few more pics.

It's finally made it to the outside world. Not hidden away in the shop. Needed more head room today for its face lift of sides and hopefully the roof.

It didn't get it's roof. But the sides or on and I get to go get a new nail gun. The insides of my other gun came apart. Hopefully roof will get done during the week. All my goodies come in this next week also.

Clint - She's a beaut! I really love the design of the 2+2 - thought about using that when we build ours. The 2+2 has a ton of room compared to a 4x8 0r 5x10 but looks every bit as streamlined and compact as those. By the way - very nice construction skills and I am envious of your property.

Take care,
Tom

Thank you Tom for the complements. I don't think I could ever build one of those Woody's. I am just glad that I can cover everything up with paint, trim or plastic. I am with you on the profile it is so roomy and for two people it could be a mansion. I am assuming that the credit goes to Nick Taylor. The place is nice with lots of trees. We are still in town just at the end of a dead end and 2 sides are pasture. We have been there for 10 years and has served good for our first home but I believe we are going to sell and move out farther into the country.

Well the roof plywood is on so it will be good and dry by the weekend. Now it is on to the hatch and door. The two things I have been dreading to do. Most of my goodies are here and the roofing material should be here tomorrow. Took it out for its first shake down trip in the back yard. Everything went good except ran out of gas in the tow vehicle. Hopefully get some more done this weekend.

Got to work more on the trailer tonight. Took a 4x8 sheet of plywood and made a lot of sawdust and my hatch ribs.

Question to everyone. I am using the plastic hinge on this build. I was wondering what is the order to put things in. Roof ply, then hinge, then roofing material, then strip of metal for hinge reinforcement. Or does the hinge go on top of the roofing material?

For the ribs I took a templet of 1/4" hard board and marked it on to some cabinet grade 1/2" ply. Cut that out and smoothed out the cuts. Then used that to run the pattern bit around. Made 9 of them, doubled up on the ends then one every foot.

For some reason tap talk is only loading 2 of my pics instead of the 3 that it usually does.

Clint -

Congratulations on getting the roof installed and nice work on the hatch ribs. Aren't routers wonderful tools - espcecially if you are building a curvy teardrop?

You'd asked about how to install the plastic hinge. I need to admit that I haven't installed one, but I have seen a couple of installations. On the ones I've seen, the hinge was installed on top of the outermost finish material. That's how I did my hurricane hinge - it went on top of the aluminum skin. Of course I used sealer under it and would imagine the same is done for the living hinge too. Madjack used the hinge on both his hatch and doors. On the doors, he offset the screws on one side of the hinge to the other side. With them offset this gave him more "swing" on the doors since the screw heads wouldn't touch each other. I guess you don't have to worry about that on a hatch. Like you're doing, I think it is a good idea to use a strap over the hinge to spread the load of the screws.

You're in the home stretch now. Keep the sawdust flying.

Take care,
Tom
