I purchased 4 pop out windows tonight for $10 each off of Craig's list, and then found this disturbing bit of washington state trailer requirements for "home made" trailers

If the trailer is constructed from vehicle parts purchased from a wrecking yard the
presenter is to provide ORIGINAL invoices with name and address of the business, a
description of the parts or parts sold, and date of sale, including the wrecker number
and stock number or VIN from the parts vehicle.
If the trailer is constructed from vehicle parts purchased from a private individual, a title
for the vehicle the parts were taken from or a NOTARIZED bill of sale must be
presented. The NOTARIZED bills of sale must include the names, addresses of the
sellers and purchasers, a description of the vehicle, including the identification or serial
number, date of sale, part or parts sold, and purchase price.

Does that apply to parts in the body of the teardrop too, or just the frame? Here in Maryland it's the same, but what they are interested in is the frame, not the stuff you use in the body of the teardrop.

If it doesn't fly, there's always MAINE!!

I hope you are right the frame will be all new, and I am sure if they get a whole box of receipts, they will be too busy to notice, I once passed a vehicle inspection with a severely questionable fuel tank, by leaving a case of beer in the floor boards with a couple missing, they dumped them all out looking for empties, and didn't even notice the fuel tank, Washington has an open container Law 8)

Register it in maine for a year as a homebuilt then take the title and registration to your dmv and it shouldnt be a problem. I lost my oem certificate so I gegistered it in maine, in march Im gonna switch it to jersey for simplicity sake. In NJ for a homemade trailer they want receipts for everything that went into it and I didnt have it. In Maine, you sighn a form saying you built it and thats all they care about.

Just put together a load of receipts to document your build, and make them a copy to keep. It may differ from state to state, but I've never heard of anyone questioning a window unit or whatever was built on top of the frame. How you title it, utility trailer vs. camper, may effect how you can insure it however. I've done 5 from scratch frame up....and never had an issue in Ca., but it does vary from state to state.

I am soooo glad i live in Georgia! I filled out a form, a cop signed it after I riveted a little aluminum plate to the tongue with a VIN, and that's that. So maybe you could register it in a simpler state. Seems Georgia doesn't care if it's a bare trailer or if it has a half scale replica of Mt. Rushmore on it.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross the road without having his motives questioned.
