Thanks for the kind words. For my designs I just start with a full size pattern and draw out the profile keeping in mind where everything is going to go. Then I clamp the pattern to the trailer and see what it looks like. Make any adjustments and then I follow that plan to the end. It works for me.

looks great. I like all the slide outs. especially the baskets, too. if your battery is going in back, what's going in the tongue box? water tank?

That is looking sweet! The marine vinyl top will give it a cool, classic look.

Thanks guys. The tongue box will hold my camp chair extension cord, stakes, lantern etc. All the little stuff that can be dirty. I have the box stripped and primed. Also the doors just need the Woody trim made. I am getting close! I will post more pics soon.

The "Slowmobile" Is under way! update 5/22/12

I am really interested in the base paint. I remember the thread. I have had nothing but misery in applying spar varnish and would like an alternative on our woodie.

Well it will be awhile till I know how this base paint holds up. It is a heavy bodied exterior polyurethane. It seems to dry slower but as it does, over several days it starts to harden . The sample I made weeks ago is pretty good. I will post back after I see how it holds up. There is a slight milky tint to it on the dark mahogany.

Well I have made some progress. The "Walk the Winds " gathering in Wyoming is less then 7 weeks away.....I need to make a big push to get this done with enough time to try it out once before a long trip.

I stripped the trunk. There were 5 coats of paint on it.
Image

Three coats of Rustoleum and it looks pretty good from 20 feet. This was being used as a kids toy box and they were not kind to it. But it is large and light weight so it will work.

Image

During our Galena Sleep over gathering ,I took advantage off all the guys to help put on the vinyl top. The roof is 2 layers of 1/8th " Baltic Birch with 2 coats of black epoxy on it. The fabric is a Marine Vinyl that is UV protected. There is a special water proof contact cement needed to glue the fabric down. Glue both sides and wait till it dries and put it in place. You only get one chance. It really does "Take a village to raise a vinyl top". A special thanks to all the guys for the help. This would have been a disaster if I tried this alone!

Image

It came out great. A few worries but we got it to work. Still have to put fabric on the hatch.

Image

Image

I am using aluminum edge molding and put window seal tape on the corner where the top meets the woody side. May not be needed but the tar stuff seals where the screws go thru.

Image

Image

Starting to look like something...
Image

I made a little progress in the galley, still more work to do but I'm getting close.

Image

Fenders are all painted and ready to be installed. My wife just sewed me some fender welting to go between the fender and the wood. Nice extra touch for no real money.

Image

Got the doors mounted, the windows in and all the door locks installed.

Image

So I still need to mount the Fantastic Fan, finish the galley hatch and some electrical. There is more but fir now I don't want to think about it!!!

Dude! The trunk looks great and you made the right choice putting the vinyl on there. It really makes the look.

Results NOT Typical

There. Gotta protect the forum from legal action by clods like myself who look at build pictures like yours and several others' here and think they can whip one up just as nice and easy as you make it look.
