Register it as a utility trailer. Mine is built on a Red Trailers unit. I took the certificate of origin and a bill of sale to a notary and came out ten minutes later with a plate. HF trailers come with a certificate of origin, I think.

Well, if you bought the trailer in GA and had it registered there, it's a simple matter of taking the registration to a notary.

If you bought it here, then it depends on how anal you are about doing it by the book.

To do it completely by the book, you need to build the trailer, complete with lights and a floor. Take it to an enhanced inspection station, have them sign off on the necessary form that the trailer is road-worthy. Then take that, along with the certificate of origin and the receipt to a notary and they can then finish titling it.

In addition to a title, you need to renew your registration every year.

The cost is the main deterrent to this as, beyond the titling and registration fees, the inspection stations can charge pretty much anything they want. I've seen some charge as much as $100 for what typically amounts to a 5 minute inspection.

The thread link that was provided by Kevin discusses registering the title in Maine by mail. There is some question about the legality of keeping the trailer registered in Maine permanently. Near as I can tell, though, there is nothing wrong with registering it in Maine and then taking that registration to a notary and transferring that to a PA title and registration.

PA is a royal PITA when it comes to these types of things. You're right about that.

For the record, though, leaving your truck registered in GA isn't legal. Once you establish a PA residence you only have a specific period of time to change your drivers license and vehicle registrations to PA.

Not sure about any off-road vehicle you may have, though.

You also need pictures and a weight slip.

Here's my experience with registering my first HF trailer kit in PA....

I went with the Maine registration on my second build.

Last time I had an enhanced inspection done the pictures were taken by the inspection station. I wasn't sure if the weight was listed on the paperwork you get from HF or not. If not, then, yeah, you need a weight slip.

That's easy enough to get. Just run it by your local gravel yard. They'll usually weigh it up. Either free or for a couple of bucks.

Incidentally, Zach, did you ever inquire as to what would be involved with transferring your Maine registration to a PA title?

I was told by a notary that for states that don't require a title all you need is to bring the current registration along with the bill of sale and they can issue a PA title.

Seems like it should be simple enough to transfer the Maine to PA.

Nope, never asked PennDOT. I don't have any intentions of ever transferring the tags to PA. I like my Maine vanity tags. PA doesn't give you that option.

I've never had a cop give me any problems. And I tow my trailer a lot. Not just for long trips either. As I type this, its hitched to my car parked at my office because I haven't taken it back to my storage shed outside of town. Its usually hitched to my car for weeks at a time because I don't feel like wasting my time going to and from the storage shed.

Well, residence is established by where you spend more than six months of your year. Not necessarily by where you have property.

I've been criticized for recognizing such things in the past, though, so I'll end with that other than to say if you're leaving your TV tagged in GA you may as well tag the trailer there.

If you decide to transfer it to PA later it shouldn't be that difficult.
