Well I guess this is it. I bought the NT 5 x 8 trailer and I put it together.......... :)

I went to the big box store store and bought the plywood, insulation and the black goo. You guys are right....that stuff is a pain in the neck to work with.

I built the floor frame and insulated it.......... :) That's my Dad. I couldn't do it without him. He has been and is a great teacher for me!!!!!!

And finally..............the black goo. I'm glad you only use this on the bottom. I just hope it dries before next summer. :worship:

Looks good. What is the thickness of that insulation?

It is 1 1/2 inch foam board. I used 2 x 2 framing for the floor and 1/2 inch plywood.

I finally found time to work on the build. Tonight I was able to mount the front and rear stabilizers. Things went pretty well except in the front I had to orient the stabilizers from front to back due to the A frame tongue. The back are oriented from side to side. I hope to be able to frame out the side walls in the next day or so.

We are hand fitting some of the pieces around the hatch. That when progress slows to a crawl.

We managed to get up both side walls except for the front bulkhead. The side walls went together without to much trouble and we got the galley bulkhead in and squared up. Starting to get an idea of the size. I ended up with a 24 inch radius for the galley hatch and will probably use the same radius for the front wall.

Re: Kentucky Benroy.......Rimple??????

Postby Steve 70 » Sat Dec 22, 2012 11:29 pm

Well I had another good day working on the Benroy / Rimple. I ended up making both the front and back radius the same. It works out good for me as you can see from the pic.....This was a test bend using 1/4 inch luaun plywood and it worked.

I was concerned with bending the plywood around the radius. Finding 1/8 inch birch was turning out to be a real chore and not to mention.... $> Because it worked, this will save me :money: that I can spend on the gadgets....flat screen tv....AC :thumbs up1:

I managed to get the 1/4 inch plywood in the interior on the back and side walls. This allowed me to install the 2x2 roof spars.

I hope to start roughing in the electrical and install the interior ceiling. I would like to use a birch beadboard for the ceiling and boat hull liner on the walls.

The rough opening of the door is 28 1/2 inches. I am going to make a pre hung type door which will bring the finished opening down to around 26 to 27 inches with a finished height around around 38 inches. This will make getting in and out of the camper easier......at least for me. According to my wife, petite is not an adjective that you would use to describe me.
I am going to lower the windows about 5 inches. After getting inside to get a feel of the interior, I realized that the windows were too high. This will be an easy fix and I think will make being inside the camper more enjoyable.

I have decide to go with a 110 volt camper, no DC. I have read many of the posts discussing this issue and understand the positives of each. In the many years that my family has been camping in modern type campers, we have spent most of our times at campgrounds that offer 30 amp service. We have only had one time that the DC system kicked in and that is when the campground got hit by a major thunderstorm and knocked the power out for only a couple of hours. At my wife's family farm where we like to spend time both leisure and hunting, the barn that sits over in the field where we like to stay has electricity. In the event that we would be somewhere that did not offer any electrical service, I have a compact generator that was purchased at HF. http://www.harborfreight.com/63cc-900-W ... MSJ9%0D%0A
This gives me AC to run lights, a radio or small fan. It is small and compact enough to carry in the front tongue box.
I have tried to be financially responsible in building this camper. When I researched the cost of making the build both AC and DC, purchasing the converter, DC wire, DC lighting, and a good deep cycle battery, reflecting back on past camping experiences and the need for DC, I along with my financial advisor (sometimes called Teresa, wife, BOSS among other titles) decided to go with the all 110 VAC build.

Re: Kentucky Benroy knotty pine ceiling

Postby Steve 70 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 9:52 pm

Another good day working on the camper. My wife and I decided to go with a knotty pine ceiling. I will be building the inside cabinets against the galley wall out of knotty pine with a light stain and polyurathane finish. We want to keep the inside light and hopefully this will help.

This weekend I was able to get most of the foam insulation cut and fitted. I will be removing it as I run the wiring. I didn't have all that I needed to do the wiring and I didn't want to waste a day off so I cut the foam. A little ahead of the game but who cares. I am having a great time doing this. Reading all of the great posts and getting new ideas and trying to see how they will fit with what we are doing is great!!
100809

After fitting the foam insulation, I installed the trailer jack. Should have had it done before but was enjoying working on the camper itself so I put that on the back burner. Done now...
100813

Then I worked on the knotty pine ceiling. We really like the way it came out and are excited about getting it stained and finished. We are going to use sand colored hull liner on the walls like what was used in the Little Swiss Teardrop. http://littleswissteardrop.com/ We loved the look and with a camper this small we thought it would make it a little more cozy. ;)

You might think about roughing in some wires for 12v system later. For a minimal amount you can inbed wires in the walls for future lighting. That way you can add a battery and such later if you decide you want it. My hunch is that you'll likely want 12v later.

Great build.
