RERUN- The adventure begins

Postby Sidekick » Wed May 28, 2014 8:39 am

I posted this in general discussions before I found out that there was a place for build diaries- Sorry
Having built several boats and other projects I know how hard it is to weatherproof seams. That is why I am starting out with a weather proof top taken off of an old conversion van. It has some nice curves and should look spiffy when the package all comes together. Originally I had planned to take 2 pick up toppers and glass them together to make a longer and tapered build-. I posted a request on Craigslist for broken or damaged toppers and in 4 days I was offered 8 toppers for free- all I had to do was go pick them up. I have 2 in my back yard right now. I Changed my plans and I am going to use those toppers for scrap pieces on my build.

Total spent to date
Fiberglass topper- 50.00 local pick and pay
axle- 0 ( donated by one of my friends)
frame metal -78.00
wood for floor 34.00- Home Depot
wood for framing- free ( taken from crated a/c units at past job
Lights- 32.00
wiring- free ( left over from Dune Buggy fab
switches- 6.00 off ebay
Inverter- Donated by my father
Stove and sink- free taken from a scrapper pop up camper

The adventure begins
I am calling the trailer RERUN because it is mostly made up of salvaged pieces and parts giving them a new purpose..
Once I figure out how to upload pictures I will post them

Purchased 12 pieces of 2x2x8 and 2 sheets of 1/2 treated plywood. Cut the base for the trailer and traced the topper to the plywood. A lot of curves, I think this will be challenging . Going to have a swing out door in the back to house the galley and the cooler. Just trying to envision the storage area that will house a slide out stove, sink, and cupboard. Cabinets are not my forte. Scored 6 premade drawers at a garage sale down the street. I think my garage is gonna be packed before too long. Hopefully I can use this trailer to store some of my winter projects so i will have room to move around.

the walls are going to be fun to make with the slight curvature of the topper. Stay tuned

I am hoping that this trailer is going to be very light weight. I am pulling it behind this120701120727

Well, it is 10pm and I am bushed. I got the frame all welded and brushed, the tongue mounted, the floor framing done and the walls laid out. Been drafting the galley and am running into snags. I can 'tmove forward with this until I figure out how I am going to hang the rear door and re enforce the hinge point. The back is going to open up like a refrigerator door with part of the galley attached to the door. I snagged some door catches off of a tonneau cover for a chevy. Gonna hook the latches up to a key lock on the side of the trailer to unlock the back door via cables ( also a hidden back up - just in case). Ran out of 2x2's quite fast, so tomorrow I have a parts run to make.

Good looking topper you scored. It will make a great roof. Have you thought about doing the wall framing similar to house framing and having your "Studs" vertical and follow the outline of the topper?

The topper runs from 63 1/2 in to 64 1/2 in and is almost 13 ft long. Going to have to cut it down a bit. Framing is going to be similar to house framing just trying to figure out where everything should go and how to make it solid. I don't want this thing swaying while going down the road. Scored 3 tinted windows at Pick and pay one is 70" long and 28 inches tall with a screen and slider. I also found some formica material 4x8 sheets 10.00 ea. slate color which will go with my red and black motif. Lots of head scratching and a note pad full of measurements- he he. The hard part is going to be to match the radius of the four corners and not have them leak

Figured I woulod cut 3/4 ply to shape, sandwich and cover with 24 ga metal and use joint plastic to over lap the frp skin there.

you could use 1/8 ply for the front radius, or even 1/4". just run your "studs" on the outside of the topper. maybe even screw them to the edge from the outside. that should get your radius for your supports and just match on the bottom.. when skinned it will be plenty strong.

made a trip to home depot today and finally got enough material to keep me busy. Got the deck made and true, fabricated the side walis and liquid nailed the plywood with about 100 gold bold deck screws pre drilling every hole. Starting to look like I am getting somewhere.120824120821120822120823120826
