Forward progress on the Astroliner this weekend but the work is slow and tedious! There is so much that goes into making things fit just right. Cut, fit, sand, fit, shape, fit, shave, chisel, sand... more fitting. It takes a lot of patience to make it all come together for sure. We got the above galley cabinet pretty much built, sans doors and I'm pleased with the results! We've got a ways to go yet, but feeling good about it. I finally got to see what the control panel will look like in the cabinet and that's exciting! Anyway, here's a couple pictures. More to come this weekend...

Continued...

Another eventful weekend. As far as I can tell, we are now into day Twelve-Hundred-Thirty-Two of the Astroliner Build! I never could have imagined the journey ahead when we started all of this! Anyway... Here we are.

Last week we finished the weekend with the mock-up of the Upper Galley Cabinet:

Image
Image

Unlike all of the other radius bends we've made so far, this one was too tight to effectively bend the plywood without disastrous results. Therefore, we begin the veneering process...

I used a foam roller and paint tray to apply the Tight Bond II to the veneer and the cabinet, since there was a lot of area to cover:

Image

Image

Then I laid out the veneer, which I had pre-cut to a close (1/4") fitment:

Image

Image

I trimmed all the edges with a razor knife to 1/8", then used a router to finish off the openings:

Image

Image

After final sanding and deburring,
I laid out all the pieces and sprayed generous amounts of Lacquer. (Side note: I started out using Sherman Williams Moisture-resistant Lacquer @ $60 per gallon. A friend introduced me to Watco Lacquer, which I found at Menards. With the 11% rebate, it cost $20.23. I have sprayed a lot of material over the years and honestly, I can't tell any difference in the way it sprays, sands, buffs or looks when it's finished. As much as I'm going through in this build, that's saving me some serious cash.)

Here's the corner cabinet for the bedroom, minus the door, installed with the LED backlighting:

This is the cabinet bottom with the speaker and LED down-lighting installed:

This is the cabinet clamped into place for final fitment and the door to the control panel access:

That's about it for now! Not sure if I'll have any pictures next week. We'll mostly be running wires in the hidden raceway in the bottom of the cabinet and hooking up the control panel; then permanently installing the cabinet. We're down to the cabinets in the bathroom and the build-in's will be complete! I see a light at the end of the tunnel!

Until next time, Happy Building!

Looking awesome as always. The wiring does take a lot of planning, thinking, thinking, and time to do it and not much to show as far as progress. But it needs to be done. What's the car sitting next to the trailer and is it going to be your tow vehicle. Keep plugging along and you will be out there camping with your family in know time. :applause:

Thank you my friend. The car is a 1937 Chevy, owned by my brother. He bought it 30 some years ago when he was just a teen. Over the years, it's got the top chopped, the old frame cut and a early model Nova subframe welded in place to give it an updated suspension. It's got a sweet little small block in it and a Nova rear end. Lots of sheet metal work over the years, all handles and hinges shaved, solenoids in the doors, Frenched antennas, etc. When the Astroliner is done, the '37 is on deck. We both want to get our projects finished!

Hi Michael,
well it has been quite a while since I have had much time to look in on tnttt, so I have just had a big catch up on your build. WOW that is fantastic news for you guys over the health problems. Keep that positive attitude going. My Dads health took a nose dive when he was 28. His philosophy was "do what you can and can what you can't". he would say "I can't go duck shooting any more, but I can still hold a fishing rod". I can see you looking at life the same.
You have made a lot of progress on the Astroliner since I last looked and that interior is looking fantastic :applause: The wood paneling, the sparkles, the trimmings and fittings. It reminds me so much of my parents home that I lived in for many years. It had been built in the mid fifties by its previous owner, a master builder and perfectionist. Very modern in its day with quite a deco style, lots of wood paneling, colours and unusual features. We sold it in 2008 when my Mother went in to a home, now the current owners are selling. Both times it made national media. This is the latest. https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/home ... -condition
You sure do have my admiration.

Wow dude.. superb craftsmanship..

When I built ours I more took the "as long as it functions then whatever" approach, but yours is like a work of art... Bravo!
