Ok here we go...PMF!

Postby dales133 » Sun Oct 19, 2014 6:08 pm

let me start with a quick blurb about how building a TD came about.we live in Victoria Australia (im actualy a kiwi though) and its usualy to hot or too cold for a tent and not much inbetween.
i love my fishing and getting away but its a hastle or expensive without your own accommodation as my land cruiser is usually full of tools so unpacking and repacking realy blows.
so i was sitting around one day a couple of years ago and saw a teardrop and have been thinking about it ever since but too busy to do much about it.
ive just finished a contract i had for 3 years and im basically scratching around for work and as daylight savings has just started was the ideal time to start.

so me being me who generaly just makes things out of a picture in my mind based on copying something ive seen embarked on the trailer.
its a similar design to the top end camper trailers and things like the kimberly camper except no independant suspension, was out of my budget and to complex to build.
as for the design it keeps changing as i do more research but it was always going to have underfloor storage,a good size watertank offroad hitch and suspension.
im now leaning toawards a benroy as ive seen so many amazing ones here and elsewhere , it was going to be a more grass hopper design.

so heres what ive been upto!
(when i get this photo thing sorted!!!)

the chassis is made out of 3mm 70x50 witch is basically 3x2, i know this sounds heavy and you experts are screaming "overbuild" in your heads and your more than likely right i do intend taking this some pretty out of the way places including a Simpsons desert crossing... don't want anything to break!
the cross members are 2mm 50x50 except for the front one that is 70x50 also,

the track width is the same as my landcruiser witch is 1830mm outside of wheel to outside of wheel or 1230 between wheels.
for this reason im basing my design around these dimensions and settled on overall body dimension (at this stage) of 1630mm or 5 and 2/3rd feet(ish),
it is problematic with sheet sizes and blows out costs a bit but her indoors prefers it to fit a queen and it suits me because i can blame all the xtra money i spend on gadgets on that 8) .

Nice! For what you are doing, those frame tube sizes sound just about right to me. In fact I might have gone a little heavier.

It's got 2 1/2 inch barbs to feed water plus another breather plus an 1 3/4 filler inlet that will be connected to a deck filler cap by hose similar to a boat.
I'm running self priming 12v pumps to the taps..

Thanks for the faith kcstudly

It's aluminium but it's been embossed with a "stucco" pattern.
I'm thinking of going for colored sides and natural aluminium roof so I should be able to use it somewhere
