Looking good. I like the effort you are taking to have both sides match, yet still be random in a way. Looking forward to seeing your future progress.

I like the cedar! This thing is going to look awesome when you are done! I can't wait to see it. That must have been a lot of work ripping that cedar down, but definitely worth the look that you will have when done. I remember that guy (I can't remember his name) at the TJ event in Ormond beach, that had the aluminum TD with the cedar strips inside?? He had the slide out table in the back, no galley?? His looked great as well.. yours will be as well with the cedar on the outside 8)

Keep up the good work!
Brian

Got the port side wall glued down and trimmed to match the profile. Let it set for about 6 hours and began sanding. Big plus of cedar is it is soft so it sands pretty easy. Big negative to cedar is it is soft so the belt sander likes to pile up lots of little "balls" of cedar dust. Nice to be sanding in my temporary outside garage thingy, so the breeze blows away the dust. Got about 1/3 of the first wall base sanded this evening, should be able to finish it tomorrow. I'll then flip it, trim out the door and window cuts, flip it back and start the finish sanding. Heck, I might have this wall done by Sunday or Monday, then I get to do it all over again. At least all the strips are cut and numbered for wall #2. If I'm real lucky I might be mounting the walls to the trailer by next weekend.

I promise, I'm not rushing this, it is just going along pretty well and I take lots of breaks - hey I'm old. :D

Looking Good

Just wait until you put that first coat of epoxy on it... its amazing how the color changes and the grain pops

One word of warning on the sanding. As you pointed out cedar is very soft. If I were to do it again I would skip the belt sander and do it all with a R.O. sander. Even with the R.O. go slow and go through the progression of grits. No need to go finer than 150 or so if you are using epoxy. I speak from experience as you can find plenty of belt sander tracks and R.O. sander curly cues in my cedar sidewalls.

Hey Dave, we have a saying around here, "no pics, didn't happen".

We want to see that beautiful cedar!

A wall is built. I've got at least one more level of sanding tomorrow, then I'll start the sealing. I've been going back and forth between laying epoxy/glass or not. I'm going to take a risk and go for "not". I've thought about it and thought about it and I just kept coming back to my old sailboat building days. While I did a lot of glass work on the boats, my poly finishes never failed me. I always did a 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 then 3 coats at full strength. That withstood thousands of miles sailing all over, with most in the caribe and central America. I may regret this choice, but for now I'm going for it. My reasoning is the look a poly over epoxy job gives makes it seem a bit too thick to me. Interestingly, that is the exact same argument traditionalist used to use when they'd see me laying on polyurethane instead of normal varnish. Time will tell if this lasts or not. Also, I've been looking at a poly over cedar job I did on some exterior trim I have here at home. 9 years of Florida sun and rain and it is like the day I put it on. Just have to top it off every year or two.

The "roof" of the camper arrived today - 60mil white EPDM rubber. This stuff is fantastic! We've had the thinner, black version on two of our porch roofs for about 8 years now with no problems. The original EPDM roof that was first factory installed in the mid 1960s in Miami is still going strong. Won't be worried about leaking with that stuff. Luckily I still have a ton of the glue and caulk that has never been opened from the original lay, hopefully it is still good.

Got the first two sealer coats on the port side wall today. If weather stays like today, I should be able to get at least the 3rd sealer coat and maybe the first full coat tomorrow.

Wall is just propped up on the floor, when mounted it drops 2"

base door, sealer drying
130003

the little "cloud" window. Still haven't decided on what to do with the main door windows.

I'm one of those that likes to build everything I can on the "flat". Sometimes it creates a huge problem doing that, as you just have to really count on having made all mating surfaces match when erected. But if it works, then it makes things so much easier to do it that way. With Conch Fritter, if all works out, when I finish the starboard wall (hopefully by next weekend) and set both walls, then those are pretty close to ready. I'll be building the galley system as soon as the other wall is done and then the front/roof/back. Got in the EPDM for the top roof the other day.

So, now I'm waiting on the 2nd finish coat of poly to cure on the port side and will know tomorrow if it made it through the night or not. Fingers crossed

Chuckles, it is western red. I cut it out of a handful of rough cut 2x6, of which most were in the "cull" bin at the local HD. Not sure why they were there and marked, but made me happy.
