I really like the idea of the long drawer to carry tables. Do figure it out.

The cabinet door build has come to a screeching halt. Hornets/wasps have invaded my basement workshop, so, I am researching traps (I'd rather not spray). Last time I turned on the lights out came about a dozen of the little bastards and they were mad as hell. I know exactly where the nest is, just inside the sill behind a wad of fiberglass insulation where a water pipe comes into the basement. I sealed the hole from the outside last night after dark and didn't think about the possibility that they may want to then invade the interior of my home.

I guess I will suit up with some heavy winter clothing tonight and evict the little devils. At that point I will be arming myself with some spray. Wish me luck!

When it's dark, they should be home & ready for a bit of bug juice. I'm usually a live & let live type, but cross the line & all bets are off. I say nuke 'em!

Dozens of them had my workshop under their control. It was WAR! And it was ugly. I was wounded and that meant the end of those mad little flying bastards. Suited up for total wasp/hornet annihilation. Workshop is now secure. War is hell. Whew!

Traps were working, caught three. that wasn't even a dent in their numbers, so...

Building my galley cabinets and doors. My neighbor has been asking me if I need any wood burning done; one of his hobbies. The result after seeing various TD logos...

Image

Next up is getting the cabinet doors glued up and installed. They are red cedar. I hope they hold up as red cedar is not the strongest material for attaching hinges.

Progress on galley. Cabinets are mostly done. Just some pulls to install and create a partition behind the drawers below the counter top. The dark finish on the red cedar (linseed oil) is darker than I had hoped, but, it looks OK. The drawer and door pulls should help there.

Image

Center, top cabinet opens down for a flat area to keep cooking codiments and such.
Image

Side drawers are only ten inches deep leaving room for one or two U1 deep cycle batteries behind them.
Image

Bottom drawer holds folding table and LP gas stove.
Image

There were some valid concerns voiced by forum members about the structural integrity of the cabinet frame with the wide drawer I was installing. I added 3/4 ply partitions inside the middle cabinet to help stabilize the frame. The partitions are anchored to the bulkhead on the back and the frame in front. It seems to have really stiffened up the framing here. An aside to that concern... the frames are only 1 1/4" wide. I think most cabinet frames are 2". That is another reason the middle upper cabinet swings down. With the three cabinets up there there wasn't enough meat in the frame to attach the 35mm hinges and have the swinging doors clear each other. I'll stick with 2" frames from now on.
Image

Folding table in place with gas stove. It is not completely finished; no hinge or brackets yet. It will hang over the slightly open side drawer with a bracket on one end and legs anchor the other end.
Image

Table also fits my small weber grill.
Image

Next up...
- folding table bracket to fit drawer and hinges
- mount ventilation fans
- start the dreaded hatch build :frightened:

Tim, this is looking very nice now. The wood has a nice warm tone & that bottom drawer looks nearly big enough to sleep in. With what I've seen of your wood working, the hatch shouldn't be any trouble for you on this build. Looking good!

Years ago when i was cabinet making we used to rebate a fillet out or the back of door ect that were soft in nature and glue in a hardwood replacement.
You could even get a slot cutter and fit an insert on the hinge side of the door, glued in with tb2 would be strong as any hardwood

That's a great idea! If I run into any trouble later I will have an easy fix. I used 35mm euro hinges, so, I don't think they will be too bad. Lots of surface area to reinforce the hinge. These hinges use a plastic dowel like insert that the mounting screws thread into. Probably a much more secure system than just screws into the wood.
