NEW BUILD OFF ROAD TEARDROP FOR THE FAMILY!!!

Postby Sbro2013 » Wed Nov 23, 2016 4:52 pm

Good morning all,
I am a new member to the site and been reading and learning from many of you about building a teardrop through the vast info available here.
This journey I am about to set off on is a large and new project AND first time build for me. I have spent significant time researching and working my current design in CAD and the fun part is about to begin.
A little about the project in its infancy:

This build will be completed by July 2017.( hard line in the sand as the family is booked for vacation and the trailer is needed! :)
Trailer frame has already begun and pics will come as completed milestones are hit. I welcome the feedback from the forum users to help me along the way!

Major build design points:
Airbag'd trailer frame( will also be used as a utility trailer and the teardrop structure will be modular. Details later as to my decision for bags versus springs.
Fully insulated for all season use.
furnace and potential A/C
Roof rack system for future mounting of RTT.
Will run on 37" rubber ( to match the rig for backup spare tires)
On board instant hot water, land hookups, all LED lighting, solar
Considering an exotic veneer for the interior/ galley walls ( Birds Eye Maple or Bubinga as potential veneers)
Considering building a pop-out on the driver side to house a bed for my son until he is big enough to sleep in the Future RTT, then will be reallocated for the dog bed!:)

I'm looking forward to this experience and sharing my success and struggles along the way.
This is also my first time posting to ANY forum so apologies in advance for screw ups!
Here is what the general flavor will be and about 50% completion of the trailer frame:

Welcome to TNTTT.

As you are planning to also use your trailer as a utility trailer consider installing stake pockets internal to your frame. You are at the right stage of construction to do that. Have a look at my build journal to see how I remove/replace the teardrop camper. Have fun with your build.

Had to take it out of the garage today to clean.....Got the trailer flipped over and on a set of donor rubber. Still have welding left to do, shocks to install, gusseting, fenders and body mount brackets for the teardrop.
Thought I would post a shot of the trailer behind the Jeep:

Have a great week everyone!

Here is a slapped together rendering of the pop-out idea I'm considering on this build. The size will fit to accommodate a toddler size bed. Roughly 32x32x50L inside dimensions.

Looking good! I found that with the flip up tongue latch the spare gets in the way. I have a long enough tongue on the Wee-Go to be able to open the rear door on my jeep and swing it out while I hook up. That allows me to see the hitch too.
Naw Bro, We ain't lost. We just ain't never been here before!

So my plan is to get it licensed with a standard coupling, then go to a 3axis high angle coupling. And I will be moving my spare up to clear everything. Coup will be something like this:

How old's your son? I've been greatly impressed with how RYU tackled this addition with a slide-out bed platform:

It would greatly simplify your build plus you could go with two doors which is one of the things that make teardrops so two-person friendly.

Take a look at Dale's build for a way to do the slide-out section. His idea for the drawers would work well for the bed. Very nice job on the steel work, going to be a great build!

Happy new year everyone!
Now that the Christmas season is over we can probably all get back to our projects..!
Managed to get the fenders fab'd up yesterday and ready to tack up to the frame.
