KC,

Thanks! Designing and sewing a galley tent was a lot more challenging than I anticipated, but it sure is nice to put it to good use...9 nights over the course of three trips so far. We've got a 14-night trip planned soon.

Thanks! Sailrite Kits instructional videos were a big help to me as a rookie at sewing.

Stubs for Roof Poles Failed...Version Two Installed

Postby Dusty Mark » Tue Apr 02, 2019 2:14 pm

Two out of the three aluminum stubs that hold the base of the roof poles in position at the galley hinge failed during the first season of use. The originals were fashioned from 3/4" aluminum tent pole material. I had cut slots in the tubing and bent those back to form the tabs that fastened to the roof. They were awful weak.

Here's version two. Turn a piece of hardwood to fit inside the aluminum stub. While the wood insert is still in the lathe, drill a hole to receive a 10-24 threaded insert. Superglue the wood inside the tubing, then screw in the threaded insert. (Ask me why I know this order is important...) Fit a piece of 1/8" aluminum to fit in the hurricane hinge slot. Drill a countersunk hole from the bottom of this piece to fit into the threaded insert. Screw the assembly into the hurricane hinge groove.

Version two should stand the test of time and my wife's solo teardrop trips!
