The birth of Homer

Postby oldschoolimport » Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:54 pm

My wife and I have been planning a build for a while, and it finally kicked off this week. The plan was a 5x10, but parts availability gave us a 6x10. No complaints from me, I'm a big ole boy.

We are using the same wheels and tires as on my wife's Kia Sorento, to keep from having to take a second spare tire, and it gives us the option to put one on the car, and use the spare on the trailer, if need be.

The trailer has 2 2" hitch receivers in the back for a motorcycle carrier. I recently restored my brothers trail 90, which was the first motorcycle I ever rode. It had a place on an airstream when we were young, and now it's headed back to the campground on the squaredrop.

Becca said we had to name it. So after several days, we came up with Homer. Homer wrote the Greek poem, "The Odyssey". We will be taking Homer on several odysseys in the near future. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Today, I finished running the tracks for the ground lights. I got the running lights completed, but was one roll of LEDs short of having enough to finish the white ground lights for when we are set up. I also finished the carrier for the little motorcycle. It's almost time to start on the actual structure.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Got the floor done today. The asphalt paint is drying now. Hopefully it will be flipped back over and secured tomorrow.

And yes, my shop is too full. There is a parts room and 3 motorcycles behind the rzr, and project car in the front corner. I was hoping to be in my new shop by now, but that just didn't happen.ImageImageImage

What gauge steel did you use for the trailer?

I'll have to find out. A buddy has a metal fabrication shop, and he ordered the steel.

Today was a good day. I finalized the floor plan, and built the wall frames. I'm going 4 1/2 feet tall. With 4'x10' aluminum for the sides, and 12" x 10' black diamond plate, I can cover the frame rails up to the roof, with a little overlap where each piece meets. It will give my tall self a little extra sitting room, and also give a little extra room for a grandbaby bunk across the foot end. ImageImageImageImageImage

Todd said it's 14 gauge. Said it's light enough but still strong enough for what I'm doing.

Well, the doors came in today. After the test fit, I got the interior walls hung and the walls attachedImageImageImageImageImage

Well, it's pretty much done. The portable air conditioner couldn't keep up, so I put a small window unit in, and it will freeze you out. Our first trip out, we had a thunderstorm. Watching the lightning thru the roof was cool, and we didn't have any leaks. I've since gotten a 3" rise hitch, so it sits more level. Still need to build the roof bars and get an awning, but that's not keeping us from using it.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
