My first build

Postby peterjbh » Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:04 am

I live in Montana and like to do off the beaten path photography. So after searching for an RV I decided to build my own after exploring the Teardrop world. Going to use the Big Woody design but going to build inside out. Just makes so much sense. Starting with this raft trailer and will trim down the plywood floor after completion.

Doing your own build is really fun and not insanely difficult. Don't be in a rush, if it takes 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years, so be it. Be ready to make changes fairly constantly. It will never be finished, and that is part of the fun. It will be usable fairly quickly, but never "finished". Take a good look at the foamies, ours is maybe 80% foam, I now wish I'd gone far more in that direction. I'm now convinced you can make any design (almost) with a foam core or full build.

Ask questions and have fun!

Never heard of the foam building method. Can you point me in a good direction?

Looks like you're off to a good start. Nice base platform.

There is a whole section on this forum devoted to foam building technique.
Snoop around on it a bit. A lot of great info there. I too think it's the best way to build strong yet very light.

There is a whole section devoted to foamies! Including the very entertaining but VERY long "thrifty alternatives" thread that kind of got it all started.

Short version:. Foamies are made of covered insulation foam.

They can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make them. But are lightweight and can be made without too many specialized tools.
