I got the last pieces of paneling cut and painted and ready to install under the bed today. Tomorrow I hope to install them and put the ‘bed board’ back in place and start on the rear doors. Spring is on the way! Still teens at night here but 40s during the day so the trailer warms up enough to use glue and paint. It was 60 in there when I cut and painted those pieces of paneling.

Quite a bit of progress today. Much doesn’t show, but it has been bugging me for a long time. First, the bolts that hold the rear ‘bumper’ had to be removed and countersunk so the rear doors would sit flat across them. The design has changed since they were put in and the doors will now be behind the bumper. There will be a 2x2 across the bottom of the bumper for the doors to sit on for support during travel. I also got the rest of the ugly seal/paint applied to the galley area.

The bed platform isn’t in place in this photo and the countertop has been removed.

Tomorrow, I hope to sand and varnish the redwood countertop and do some other tasks. The door that serves as the bed platform is back in place, since the insulation and paneling is in place under it. That gives me a better place to sit and work in the living space. I repaired what will become the front window too. The ONLY window I salvaged from the old 5th wheel trailer of a neighbor’s had been pried open and the frame bent. That took a LOT of fiddling to fix, but it I think it is going to work. There is a bit of cabinet work to do next to the bed and at the foot of the bed. ALL that space under the bed is for things like extra food, clothes, bedding, etc. The truck will carry any heavy items. I hope that the balance works out so that the batteries end up in the center of the back, under the countertop in the galley too. So far, the springs look good. Fingers crossed.

If all goes as planned, the ugly paint will be covered with a tan paint and the rest of the paneling and doors will be stained and varnished birch plywood. Should make a nice match with the carpet. I may even get crazy and paint the ceiling tan too. :?

Thanks! I sanded and varnished the galley counter today. I wish I knew the history of this wood. The boards (I had two of them) were 20 feet long, a foot wide and rounded on one edge. Someone suggested ‘stair tread’ material. Could be. But, they are perfect, clear, NO knots. VERY gray. I had to use the belt sander on this one to get some of the color to show through. Must be old growth redwood, no idea how they got here. I found them in my garage when we moved here.
I am going out later to cut the paneling for around the bed and maybe work on some of the cabinetry.

Here’s the galley countertop. I’ll varnish it one more coat tomorrow.

And this is the first piece of paneling with a coat of stain. It will get varnished tomorrow I hope. (Birch, “1/4”) They didn’t have any of the 5/32” underlayment plywood at HD the other day. Even with all those notches... it fits!

The paneling got a coat of varnish today and the countertop another coat. The paneling is in place in this pic, the countertop just lying on the bed for now. Most of the camper will be paneled with the same stained and varnished birch plywood. All the ugly ‘primer’ will be painted a nice tan color and maybe even the entire topper.

There will of course be a bulkhead between the foot of the bed and the galley.

You can see the 3 gallon shower sprayer in this pic. I removed the TALL handle and it will be replaced with a rope handle to allow towing the filled unit from a water source. It will be painted black for solar heat collection too. That cabinet will have a drawer in the upper opening, plus a pull out table. There will also be doors, two in the galley and one in the cabin for access to the potty bucket.

The smoke pipe for the stove/water heater is wonky in this pic, it is just propped up. I wanted to see how much space is left... and there’s room for a single burner stove to sit to the right of the heater. That way I can heat coffee or soup or something simple without involving the galley. The shelf will be covered with a stainless steel ‘shelf’ that will be propped up enough for a cookie sheet to fit under it. That will allow air flow under the heater and stove as well as provide a good place to sit hot pans by using the cookie sheet on the shelf to the left. All of that area will be lined with aluminum heat protection too.

No progress on the Lazy T today, I had a long overdue project for my wife. I made a shelf and hanging platform for a bunch of our cast iron cookware so it is easier for her to get to.

But... I did find some vintage fabric for the curtains in the camper. I’m excited about this one. 3.75 yards of it! I bet I can make all the curtains and a pillowcase with that much material.

That beautiful fabric for the curtains arrived today. Now to look up how to make simple, lined curtains.

I was going to paint, but decided to play with the interior cabinetry more today. I managed to fit the divider wall/window in place. I had intended to make it vertical, but it wouldn’t work out like I wanted, so it has a slant to it. That actually worked out well. It makes less reflection inside and leaves LOTS of room above the window/wall for a nice cabinet. The space below the window/wall will be storage and also house the electrical controls and outlets. I ordered the controller for the solar panel yesterday, and it should fit nicely into the space.

Looks like this from outside, with the hatch open. Again, the bottom half of the rear end will be two doors that hold the cooler and stove.

The view from inside is nice, I didn’t want to lose any of the view out the back if possible. There are sliding windows for the center section, I took them out to reduce the chance of breaking them during installation.

For some reason, there seems to be a limit of 3 pics per post. So, here is the 4th pic.

NB, i can feel your pain when it comes to working outside in the lower temps

the fingers don't always receive the messages the brain is sending

the chemestry doesn't work well either when the mercury drops below the 40º mark

i've been lucky these last few days w/ days in the 40's since my current project is way too big to get inside

Mother Nature is s'post2 cooperate again today w/ sum-shime n temps in the 50's down here

sure am enjoyin' followin' your progress

your "silk purse" is shaping up nicely!
