2019 Runaway Range Runner Offroad Conversion

Postby ArkansasDon » Thu Feb 06, 2020 6:50 am

almost 5 years ago I done a complete ground up build to our 1st off road trailer (Roof Top Rent Trailer). We sold that trailer last spring & decided to get into a squaredrop. We shopped around for a candidate that would fit the criteria for us, 6 ft wide, 8 ft long w\o interior, 2 entry doors left & right, rear door. We ended up with Runaway, placed the order in 1st week of March of 2019. While waiting I made up a parts list needed & a sketch of what we both would vision the new look of the Runaway. The 2nd week of Apirl we picked it up & brought back to the farm parked it the large shop building. The next day I started removing the factory suspension. Got on line started started ordering parts: all new suspension 31" leaf springs, heavier hangers, Dexter Axle Flip Kit, Monroe Shocks & shock mounts. This thread is a short version of what went on. I done all the metal fabraction, all the wiring\electrical, solar, paintwork, truck bedliner all the interior work, & rear storage area.

pic being towed is when head back from picking it up in Florida the other is the finished product out side & interior.

removing the factory trailer tongue & fabricating a new longer heavier tongue to withstand offroading. The original A Frame style was a 2" tubing w\o back bone, I decided to go with 2 1\2" tubing with back bone, making the tongue 12" longer w\ a removal coupler by adding 2" receiver. I add 3\16" aluminum diamond plate deck on top. That's after I clean metal, prime with automotive PPG Epoxy Primer. I drilled & tapped the tongue rails so I can attach the aluminum diamond plate. I counter sung the holes in the diamond plate so the 1\4-20 machine screws will sit fluch. Also installed welded a 2000lb front jack to the tongue.

the continue of the 8" aluminum diamond plate rock guard trim for the sides. All the paintwork is done on the fenders as well spraying the 2 stage bedliner on the faces of the fenders & 8" side pieces. The side pieces I installed using automotive trim primer, 2 sided automotive trim tape & adhesive. Mocked up the tongue box on the tongue. Paintwork finished on the fenders, primed with PPG Automotive Epoxy Primer, sprayed with white matching base color & top coated with 3 coats of Automotive Gloss Clear. I masked off the finished fenders & sprayed truck bedliner on the faces.

Running the interor wiring thru a wiring chase that is plastic & matches the interior plywood color. The over head lighting is LED were I ran & fished the wire thru the metal tubing ceiling support into the plastic wire chase. Now to connect the interior wiring to the tongue box.

installing the vent ports by Climate Right for our portable forced air heating system by AT Overland. AT Portable Heater is a self contained unit housed in a custom made aluminum box, the fresh air intake & the exhaust, for the combustion chamber, are located on opposite ends of the box to avoid cross contamination.
Propane is attached to the unit via a fast disconnect fitting with a built in one way valve. The 12 volt supply for the furnace is hooked up via a marine grade 12 volt socket. The electrical wire, provided, has two marine grade plugs on either end, one to connect to the 12 volt supply and the other to the furnace & will work down to a voltage of 10 volts. The thermostat runs from the furnace to the cabin whether your prementally mounted which I did or keep it moble allowing remote control over the furnace from inside the cabin. The electronics constantly monitor the operation of the heater to make sure everything is operating perfectly. The flame, case temperature, combustion airflow, gas solenoid valve & voltage are scanned continuously. If a problem is detected the heater will instantly switch off & the red light on the thermostat will flash in code to let you know there is an issue. The furnace is Proplex H2000.

the left side awning has a awning room\screen room that sets up in 15 to 20 minutes with a zip in floor that sucks up tight against the left side of the trailer. The inner back wall unzips for left entry door access & exposes the left side window. The right side awning is Rhino Rack Batwing 270, which wraps on 2 sides, right side & rear of the trailer. Our camp kitchen is set up in the rear of the trailer
