After 15 years of lurking, my off-road family teardrop.

Postby frusteri4 » Sat Aug 21, 2021 1:11 pm

It was right after graduating from high school that a little teardrop in a sunset magazine caught my eye and I was soon hooked. Not long after, I found this site and became interested in building my own. But as an early 20s dude on a limited budget, with no tools or garage, I just said “one day”. Fast forward 15 years, out of the service, first home (garage) purchased, my newborn daughter keeping me relatively close to home, in need of something to do during her naps, my little family having outgrown my rooftop tent, and an impending pandemic keeping us at home, the time was right. So 2 years of naps and late nights later here we are. While this is more of a “built” journal, than a build journal, I will try to update with new pictures as progress continues.

For more sequential build pictures I have an Instagram page you can check out here:

I got about a ten second view of your Instagram proofs before it locked me out. I hope you can post some highlights on tnttt so us old fogies that can't keep up with the constantly changing social media type posts. Especially the photo with the many routed out recesses. What is that about? Very curious!

Don't worry about it if you don't have time or desire to post here. Just a thought.

I would love to post more here because i feel like i do owe a bit to this community for all i took while lurking. This site is kicking my butt though, i cant figure out how to change my password, and i cant figure out how to make a picture fit the page. Feeling a little antiquated instagram has just been way easier to use and there is a decent community of DIY builder pages on there. Neverless, ill try to keep them comming. Here are a few:

Very cool. Thanks for the photos.

It is a little fumbly to get photos loaded here. But much appreciated!

I have 2 x 100 watt solar pannels, a 160 ah agm battery, and a 40 amp EPever MPPT charge controller. Excuse the witing mess, i have yet to get everything all cleaned up.

The utility cabinet under the counter in the galley is where everything is mounted

The next part of the project will be either an 18 or a 25 gallon water tank with a pump and a quick disconnect on the outside of the trailer. The water tank is why I ended up building the subframe onto the trailer frame. Eventually a dual zone fridge, inverter, and exterior mounted water heater. I may get around to mounting the rooftop tent one of these days too.

Finally welded another crossbar on the roof rack to get the tent mounted up there (trailer sleeps 4 adults and 1 child now). And have begun the water system process. Renogy was having a sale on their 1000w pure sine wave inverters, so I snagged one of those. I ordered a 25 gallon tank in the heavy duty thickness from ronco plastics 6”x32”x36”. I have started getting the rest of the parts for the water system, shown here is the quick connect spray port.
