I experimented at home using the spice cake and root beer but I could not find any apple pie filling at my local stores. So, I went with pan fried apples and let me tell you, they were good. The whole dish came off real sweet but very flavorful  . I'll let you know how some of the other variations come out.

I'm thinking about white cake - 7 UP - fruit cocktail. Maybe peaches.

Living in upstate NY, we have lots of apples here too. I tried a variation with another NY product Pure Maple Syrup. I just put a couple of layers of McIntosh slices in well greased DO, sprinkle with cinnamon & nutmeg, drizzle syrup - OK pour - over apples, then spice cake with root beer and butter pats. Sounds a little decadent and it is!

I have recently done a blackberry, white cake and ginger ale. The blackberries have really thick syrup.

I also did a blueberry, white cake and ginger ale. This was my "Blue" state special.

I needed a "red" state special, so I did a strawberry, Strawberry cake and strawberry flavored water. This was almost over powering strawberry flavors but turned out really good.

Don't be afraid to experiment, it's only cooking for gosh sakes! 8)

My favorite is the peach because it is just too easy. I have also done cherry/chocolate. But the scouts threw me a curve when they asked for a third cobbler at summer camp last year... what to do? what to do?

Somebody suggested apple. Sounds good but you cannot buy canned apples in juice like you can peaches and cherries. But necessity is the mother on invention so here is what I came up with:

Using 12" DO:
8-10 fresh apples cut up into ~1/4" slices unpeeled (I used Fuji)
Some amount of apple juice so about 2/3 of apples are swimming.
Sprinkle liberally with cinammon.
Dump spice cake mix over apples, do not mix just level.
Apply about 1/2 cube of butter over top in pats.
Sprinkle MORE cinammon.

Close'r up and cook for 30-45 minutes like any other dump cobbler. Good stuff :R [/i]

Use the fresh apples. Most all Scouts can open cans, however, peeling and cutting up the apples is something maybe they have not done. Great practice for the Finger Carving Merit Badge, too!
