I tried to eat that 72 ounce steak back in 1979. Me and a friend of mine were in up in Canyon, Texas looking at going to college at West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M).
On the way home, he dared me to try to eat it (I was 6'6" and weighed 285lbs. back then). He told me that he would buy if I could not eat it.
You have to pay for it first (it was $44.12 in 1979) then they reimburse you if you eat it all. You had to eat a salad, shrimp cocktail, the steak, potatoe and then strawberry shortcake).
This steak looked like the size of a brisket, butterflied, and grilled. It was HUGE. My jaws absolutely got sore trying to chew everything in one hour.
I could not do it.
But it was making memories. If you are ever down in Texas, you will see billboards promoting the 72 ounce steak. Brings back a laugh when I see one.
I want to try it again someday for grins. Just gotta find someone to spot me the money upfront.

How would you rate the steak? Was it like GREAT, or just okay?

I'm talking about the first 20 mouthfuls--not the next 1,000.

Ira,
As I remember it...it really was not that great. The steak they gave me was really a tough piece of meat. Reminded me of what a beef brisket would be like if you just grilled it to a medium rare to medium.
My jaws were absolutely sore.
