1954 Beemer (Canned Ham?)

Postby Henery Hawk » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:17 pm

I think I maybe in the wrong section, sorry not sure how or if I can move it.

Hello everyone, My name is David and I am fixing an old camper up to use. We are trying to keep as much of its charm while still making it usable.

1954 Beemer 11' from tongue and 8' x 6' living quarters. We first lifted the body off the frame and replaced the floor and its structure underneath with pressure treated (right or wrong). Anywhere PT touches metal got self adhesive tar flashing to prevent corrosion. To do this we had to remove the lower sections of sheeting.

Replaced on piece of interior plywood and some of the 2"x2" structural frame. We also completely gutted the inside to try to make it roomier for a family of 4.

Built new cabinets and built boxes and a table to make a bed/dinette. There also is a folding bunk bed over the cabinets/sink/stove for kiddos to sleep.

We are now working on the electrical so that we can hopefully put the skin, windows, and door back on.

Here is the kicker, we are hoping to take it camping in less than 2 weeks... :?

We will see if I can get some pics loaded. I currently have it squeezed into my shed and I did not get pics before I started. :(

Dad, if you see this thank you for all your help!!! :applause:

Inside pics, not quite up to date but close... Glass knob was an original on the "ice fishing door hatch?" and the table leg is the original that we built a bracket for.

Those interior pictures are looking good, can't wait to see some shots of the outside. You'll be giving a lot of tours at the campgrounds.

Still working on getting everything buttoned up so we can get it out of the shed. The insulation, skin, corner trim, windows, and door are all back on.

The new hubs I ordered finally came in and it seems the spindle is a bit of an odd ball. .75" outer bearing and 1.25" inner. The new hub from eastern marine are the same but my spindle is too short for the hub, and also do not fit in the 8" wheels. :?

I have decided to just try and use the original hubs and wheels even though they are split wheels and require tubes. The bearings are not standard trailer bearings but I have both inner bearings ordered. Originally it came with 4.80x8 tires and I am going with 5.70x8 American made USA Trail tires. 715lbs cap each. Hopefully these will do. May think about tubs and bigger tires and wheels in the future...

hey HH, it sounds like you have the same hubs that I have on my 1956 Shasta. Here are the bearing and seal numbers that I found:

Outer bearing: #09067 = .75″ id
Inner bearing: #15123 = 1.25″ id
Grease seal: National 6362 which is an obsolete part number – the “best fit” number is National 440265 or SKF 16811, NAPA 16811
Dust cap: 1 31/32″ (1.967) threaded

mine has 15" rims 5" wide and weighs right at 1500# empty. The box is 11ft by 6'6". I'd recommend at least 13" tires for yours.

Bob, those are the right bearing numbers, the seals out of mine is a National 5715 and they both appear to be ok (some kind of felt seal?). I think in the future I may think about larger tires and wheels and possibly new axle. Right now I am on a mission to get it usable. These hubs are unique as they have small lug studs and a large center hole. Lug nuts are not tapered but flat with a lock washer.

Heading out to hopefully get everything packed and tires on it.

We had our first trip in it and we had a great time. Buffer and supplies came in today and I cant wait to get started on it.

I would love to get a couple spare wheels to fit my hubs, anyone know of a place to check?

And... a couple pics.

We made some well tubs and flipped the axle over the springs. We also moved the axle forward 6" to try and lighten the tongue weight. Looks a lot better lowered.

Got some seat cushions made. First sewing project and we are happy how they came out. I had recently picked up a couple old singer sewing machines, 1912 Model 28 & 1961 192k. I could not get the tension adjusted right for the 28 so I used the Spartan and I am glad I did.

Also with the camper lower to the ground I also had to raise or add tail lights higher up. Made some quick aluminum boxs that screw on using existing screws, that way if we find something better there will be no issue or permanent damage. The Super 44 LED lights are bright.

Working on getting it polished will be next. Not looking for perfection, more to even everything out and remove the stickers that were stuck all over. Also previous owner had "test polished" in a few spots.
