Hi All,

Has anyone used the whale pump, looks like it would work for showers and washing dishes, seems like a easy portable system to use with a 5 gallon water tank, propane and tankless water heater. Here are a couple of links.

Not much info on where to buy them. Do you have any idea of the cost? The mfr/distr. is in the UK and have no US distr. listed.

One of those might be a good replacement for an old 12 VDC pump in my home brewery, as well as for the trailer.

Old post I know, but FYI: there are tons of distributors in North America - look to marine places like West. I install their manual diaphragm pumps in boats all the time. Whale makes the 'Gulper' which is the standard for emergency (manual) bilge pumps in yachts. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything branded 'Whale'.

Yup, that's really common. Diaphragm pumps will pass 'semi-solid' material so long as there's plenty of fluid and no sharp edges.

The old saying on boats is that you can flush anything you want down the head....so long as you eat it first.
As far as the gulpers themselves go, the skipper's rule of thumb is always that the manual pump is manned by the most scared crew member.

When I was a kid, the old hands still didn't trust them new-fangled diaphragm pumps - I mean, who would trust something with a piece of rubber for a working part?

They still held to rotary bilge pumps for emergency use and if you ever tried to turn them, they would barely move. However there is no doubt that your strength doubled by the time the water was wetting your shoes and doubled again once it got up to your ankles - by then, the rotary pump turned as easily as an egg whisk.
