All about glue.

Postby kimphan » Sun May 02, 2021 11:48 am

Hi,

After reading through a lot of threads, I am pretty confused about which glue to use because the thread always say Gorilla glue that I see youtube tested both work, but there are 2 kinds of Gorilla glue original glue and construction glue.

1) Foam Wall on Foam wall: which glue? I will be putting 1.5 and 1.5 inches wall together to create a 3 inches thick side walls. I will use a wheel needle point to make holes on the sides that will be glued together.
2) foam wall extension: which glue? Since foam size is max at 8 feet, to make an 11 feet wall, I will be using the butterfly method to make the wall longer by gluing them length wise,.
3) wood to foam: which glue? the foam wall is standing on a bed of plywood.

Thank you.

I found this site that compare all gorilla glues product, seems wood glue is not an option because it's only recommended to use on wood.
https://www.gorillatough.com/product-comparison-guide/

Other than that I can't intelligently tell the differences between construction vs original gorilla glue and what would be best for which of the 3 above scenarios.

New discoveries on Foam to wood glue...

I just found this video on youtube saying that Gorrila glue or Loctite are the same strength...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBWetxzqnIs

PL Premium 10 fl. oz. Polyurethane Construction Adhesive is at $5 per 10oz
Gorilla construction glue is at $10 per 9oz

Seems all products are safe to be used on foam boards and wood.

Near the edge of my comfort zone but when glueing foam to foam with moisture cured polyurethane, which I believe PL premium is, it might not cure. The edges cure and you end up with a sealed cavity with uncured glue.

I hope someone else chimes in. I have read of channels cut in foam and probably other techniques.

Not sure why 3". Most seem happy with 3/4 or 1 inch. The foam has little strength. It the tensile strength of the fabric on the outsides that make the wall or roof strong.

Use the gorilla glue in the 8oz or 16 oz bottles.
The key is to keep the sheets under pressure while it dries for a day or two. The glue looks like honey and comes in a translucent bottle.
I have found that anything in a caulking tube doesn't dry properly for me.

When glueing foam to wood I used titebond 2 and it works fine.

@QueticoBill
Oh wow, so I don't need to get 3" walls? I was worried because my trailer width is 7.5 feet and it's 11 feet length...
Let me ask it in a separate threads hoping to get more audience/opinion, this is important because 1.5 inches wall would save a lot of time and money for me!!!!

@Shirestone
Thank you for the glue tips, I did not know about under pressure tips, seems tricky since the walls are skinny and standing up. I am thinking about doing some kind of strap and strapping it down. I saw someone with cement block on top but that is on the roof though.

White carpenters glue works good for foam to wood, I used ELMER’S 3.8L I/E PRO MAX GLUE for foam to canvas. It's a PVA glue like Titebond III but we couldn't buy it anywhere here. Also used gorilla polyurethane glue to adhere birch ply to framing, you have to wet the parts and it foams up so clamp or screw the parts together while the glue sets.

I’m waiting for several glues to come from hotwire foam factory they have a foam fusion that does not expand and you can still hot wire through it. They have another glue foam fast I ordered that’s quick dry and adheres foam to stone, wood and other materials. I’ll be testing them out soon!

What glue and walls did you end up going with? I am also contemplating building seven or eight food wide foam family rig. Gut says any four or five foot wide is going to be ten times stronger than a 7.5' with any given method and materials. I was thinking internal stiffening gussets might be a good idea on a super wide. Like the boat builders do. How did yours work out?
