From an artistic standpoint , people normally prefer Symmetry ... sometimes over practical placement ... :o Best ignore us and put the window where you need it ...

Now I need suggestions. How do I make a round window?

Let's start with one that doesn't open.

Take a jigsaw and try to cut a perfect circle? then try to cut another perfect concentric circle?

A router with a trammel (I think that is what it is called). Easy to make, easier to buy. See this page for commercially produced jigs: http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2003582 ... -Jigs.aspx

RE: Round Window

Postby mezmo » Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:42 am

Hi Mike,

Why not go to the craft store and check out embroidery hoops? [They used
to be made out of wood/bamboo] You could get a size that'd work [you'd
probably have to buy two sets to get two same-sized hoops to use - just use
the inner smaller ones for another circular window] and then trace it on the
door, router it out with a circle jig for the router, then use the hoops as inner
and outer ring "frames" in the opening that'd sandwich in and hold a
corresponding/sized-to-fit circle of plexi-glass/acrylic etc. between them
for the glazing.

Alternately:
Use a circle jig to router out the circular opening. Use an interior square
frame large enough to cover and overlap the circle by at least an inch,
and glaze that. Caulk the exterior meeting of glazing and circle opening.

Or:
Sandwich a square pane of plexi/acrylic between two foam/frame-n-foam
pieces with corresponding circular openings in each [done with router
circle jig of course] that you then glue together and caulk etc..

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

that is a neat idea about the embrodery hoop! i bet there could be a way to use that hoop for that window to open. maybe where the screws are to tighten it, that could be replaced with a small hinge?

OK , first ,the non opening window ... forget plywood and routers ... :o
Take your round window ... I assume plexiglass huh ? Mark the window line on the door(foam) ... now mark another circle , around 3/4â€

exactly! but instead of the mouse head, use the embrodery hoop. its already a good circle. just add the hinge. the hoop has 2 circles, and outter and inner circle. so you would have your frames already made.

I have seen round windows that were made with two pieces of Plexiglas.
one fixed one movable they were cut with oblong slots in them.
a bolt was inserted through the center of both then a spring to keep them pressed together
than a handle to rotate the movable one to align the slots.
not unlike a lot of wood stove air or BBQ grill vents only plexiglas instead of metal.
some tabs could be left on the fixed one set into the door to help keep it from moving
and if you want to get fancy a lip could be added to keep water out when it's open.

now if you want to weaking the door make a pocket window that slides into the door........

Embroidery hoop??? Would I have to sew little ducks and flowers on the window curtains ??? ...
There’s probably Lots of things that could be used for such purpose ... I’m still thinking about the 5 gal. plastic “can/bucket" window ... Seems easy to do and would make an Inexpensive “portholeâ€

There's some good ideas here guys. I decided to do it Glenn's way, with the DIY jig that Bill found. Going to fasten the glass right into the foam, without wood.

Here's today's progress...
