Try the teak oil , if you already have it ... You can always add something else later if you feel the need...

I used Penofinpenetrating oil finish on my front door. It's done an amazing job at protecting the wood (lots of driven rain in this area) and also gives an truly deep and rich color to the wood. We used Penofin Verde on the interior. We reapply it about once a year and the color just keeps getting deeper.

I have lost my mind. I know I have. I am going to custom bend a single piece cap for the door and edges. Yuppers, :CC

I saw brown aluminum flashing at the box store tonight. Guess what followed me home? Plus a T square and a pair of good work gloves that are too big for my hands. :NC

:NC :pictures: You say? Ok!

A shot of the ali on the work table and held in place with the new t square and c clamps. I used long nose pliers and a hammer to bend things. Worked okay. This bend is to make a fold so there won't be a sharp edge on the door.

93265

This is a slightly different shot of the bending. Working pretty well. The brown scratches, of course. I don't know what I'm doing, but it seems to be working. It looks like what I had imagined.

93266

C clamps are my friend.

93267

Lastly, I used pliers and mushed the bent edge back so that the leading edge would be rounded. If it doesn't crinkle too much, I'm thinking the edge will look pretty cool on the front of the door. I'm planning on an inch overhang. If it does crinkle, I'm going to try and make it do it in an orderly fashion and then tell everyone it's a design element.

93268

Course it still needs some mushing. It's late here, so I thought I'd better not annoy the neighbors any more. :)

Then, as I was uploading these pictures, I realized I hadn't posted a picture of the full cedar treatment for the door's interior. So here's one last :pictures:

93269

I'm pretty stoked with how things are turning out. Lots of work yet to do, but the weekend is coming and I'm tickled. That edging is going to hide a lot of "design elements"

Oh, and a 6" 1/8 drill bit followed me home, too. I need to make really long pilot holes for the door hinges. :)

Thanks everyone for looking and commenting. Your suggestions and comments have helped me a lot. I appreciate it.

A local master carpenter built it for us. I don't have that kind of skill set. Heck, I don't think I could even pull off bonnie's door as nicely!

Skills are acquired by doing ... The more you do it , the better you get ... (law of nature) Practice makes PERFEKT...
But Bonnie’s door sure is NICE eh !!! 8)

I always get in waaaay over my head in a project and have to “learn Up “ to allow completion ... :frightened: Find it really helps to be able to visualize the whole thing in your head so you’ll know what to expect ...

Steve,
I have very little to no practice or experience. I'm just thinking things through and trying. Asking tons of questions and reading all sorts of build journals on this site and others. There are tons of imperfections in the door, but i'm sure it won't fall apart. :)

Imperfections or not, that door is awesome! To paraphrase what i stated earlier, your door is unique and artistic. You are the only one who is going to note the imperfections unless someone looks closely to try and duplicate what you've done and even then, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. You are being much too modest. Great work!!! I've spent thousands of hours working on dozens of projects and I don't think I would have tried a circular door. When my oldest daughter sees another woman do something unique, unexpected or out of the box she has a favorite saying... It's "You go, Girl"!!! Since she's not around at the moment, I'll say it... "You go, Girl"!! 8) 8)

Hi Bonnie,

The 'Rund Door' in progress is looking great.
[Hey, that'd be a great name: "Der Rund Door" - to
amalgamate one out of German and English.]

Also, thought I'd let you know that there is a
sheetmetal seamer plier that's not expensive
and it'd make your job so much easier and
less frustrating. And it's a handy tool to have
around in general.

Harbor freight has it for $13-15.00:

Google Images for: " sheet metal pliers " for other looks and
sources.

Cheers,

What about annealing the Aluminum to make it bend easy ?
Norm, a while back I saw some pliers like that that slightly rippled the surface to facilitate bending a radius ... Wonder if they have those too ?
