There are so many brands of pellets. Mostly very regional. And vary from year to year. For this use I believe I would look for pellets that are mostly pine/fir. No hardwoods. On can get mesquite for grilling to add some spice.

:D :D

Make your loo smell like Phoenix, well maybe.

Feline Pine cat litter I hear is the best for portable/composting toilets. Just enough to cover, no odor and covers the unsightly.....

Need to use wood or carbon equivalent if you want to have composting toilet.

I'm using some very old Maine woods pellets, I doubt they are sold much outside of new england. Like others said, soft wood pellets, and most likely animal bedding pellets or wood based cat litter, will work.

I Went to Lowes today and only found "oak" pellets. The search continues.

Our local Home Depot & Lowes seem to only sell hardwood fuel. You might try livestock supply stores. They usually carry the pine pellet animal bedding. Do you have a Tractor Supply Company or Southern States Coop near you? They sell pine pellets at reasonable prices. Southern States advertises their pellet fuel as being white pine, $6.99 for 40 lbs. Tractor Supply sells pine pellets as "Equine Pelletized Bedding", $6 for 40 lbs.

Quit gloating...........You don't know how much I would like to find oak pellets here.

I would think that Lowes and Home Depot would be a bad place to get them any way. Here I get them at several farm type stores and a lumber yard that sells pellets stoves.

Who knows where you can find them. But only oak. Give a guy a break. Please. :D

Look in the phone book and see who sells pellet stoves.

I am just muddling through this pellet thing. I would not know a good pellet product from a bad one.
But I now guessing that an oak one is a very good one.

:scratchthinking:

When I think of absorbency and preventing bad odors, I'd lean towards pine rather than oak. That opinion is based primarily on what I've used for horse stall bedding. Plus, I know of multiple pine based cat litters and no oak based cat litter.

For burning hardwood (oak) pellets make very little ash, softwood (pine) make more ash but give more heat, the type you buy will depend on the ability of your stove.
Then there are pellets for smoking, made from wood that gives flavor when burned in a smoker.
A whole world I know little about.
Last of all are bedding pellets, made totally of pine, unlike burning pellets that are actually a blend of trees, and a kind of secret recepie for each producer. They are a poor fuel, but are entirely made for animal stalls to absorb the same stuff the potty will.

Bedding pellets huh!
I think I will look for some from my local Farm Supply Center.
