We’ve been watching the RC forum for years now and them going on about Newspaper covering for their foam planes , painted with polyurethane … Canvas or paper , it’s all Cellulose fibers , and if you have a ready source of newspapers , Your covering material costs nothing , leaves no seams , and newspaper ( any paper ) sticks to foam like crazy … Thinned TB2 or polyurethane could be used to adhere it and it could be built up extra thick in stressed areas … And you can sand it smooth …
For those that need added strength ( ? ) , you could incorporate thin fiberglass like the kind used for sheetrock …
Repairs , should be pretty easy , add new paper , sand it smooth and paint … Paper mache done this way dries to a pretty hard surface …

Just an idea … I’m always thinking of the THRIFTY aspect of trailer building … especially these days …

They use it to make bullet Proof clothing in Australia they use it between fibreglass on surfboards one of my sons said he was checking out some surfboards and the guy in the shop handed him a sledgehammer and said here bash this surfboard as hard as you can so he did it never had any affect on the surfboard it just bounced off.

PS the guy said do know how many people have hammered the surfboard , every new person who comes in the shop has a go at it .

DC, that’s pretty Cool eh !!! Many people don’t realize that paper, canvas , cardboard , and plywood all comes from trees , all the same basic material … cellulose … The synthetic materials are not …
On this canoe , it’s not really a “paper" canoe eh . That’s used to isolate the form and provide a surface to apply the fiberglass to … It’s really a Fiberglass canoe , but that’s a Cool way to do it … Technically ,he could have just applied the glass and resin over the plastic tarp he laid down first …

Now if someone will just loan me their droplet trailer so I can stick paper and fiberglass all over it … Then it would be a simple matter to spray the inside of the “form” with expanding foam … Not the prettiest , but pretty easy …

2 methods for doing paper mache, one a flour and water mix, and the other is a glue and water mix. The glue mix can be cheap white glue or wood glue mix. We made a bunch of pinatas using both, the flour mix is not as smooth, it has a texture feel to it.

I used to have a book which showed just that. A canoe form was sculpted from EPS, covered with plastic, then glass and kevlar in epoxy laid over that. IIRC, the resulting canoe had to be cut at the stems to get it off the form and the cuts repaired. One could sculpt a very rounded trailer that way and make a fiberglass shell that could then be insulated and the inside covered.

For a one off build, a glass covered foamy would be easier and cheaper but if you were going to build two or more it might be worth it or if you had a design that was just too difficult to make with the standard foamy techniques.
