Lanterns

What do you use for light, electric or fuels. The reason I bring this up is that I have both a electric (battery power) lantern which doesn't last to long and have 2 propane lanterns that I always seam to have to put new mantels on. What's the best in your opinion?

I've got 4 lanterns, 1 propane, 1 gas and two electrics...I find I use the 2 electrics more and more...they are both by Coleman and take a box full of D batteries but they really seem to last and last...I get a year or better usage from them with one set of batteries, don't have to worry about mantles/globes/refilling and they have RF remotes...the fuel powered lanterns are brighter but are more of a hassle to use since they last about 8 hours onna tank of fuel and the mantles have to be replaced just about before each trip since they break in transit...

I like using Kerosene Lanterns. I do keep Propane and Battery lanterns with me but seldom use then. Admittedly there not as bright as the propane or as handy, but I think the Kerosene is a lot warmer light as opposed to a Propane's blinding light. But I'm a little bias.



BTW; NEVER burn Kerosene in a Kerosene Lantern??? Use Charcoal lighter fluid. Less odor, brighter flame and not nearly as "Sooty".

I've got several, but my favorite is the 'ol standard Coleman; mantles with white gas.
It puts out great light, lasts a long time on one tank of gas and you can use the gas to get the camp fire going in the worst of weather... just be sure to stand clear when starting a camp fire with it.

We have used the gas colemans our entire lives. But a couple of years ago we bought a Coleman northstar propane instastart lantern. It has pretty much spoiled us. The gas doesn't get used much anymore. It is really bright easy to operate and you don't have to haul around the gas. This is the first lantern that Sherri will light. She was always afraid of the gas ones.

I've been using a propane, but I just got an LED lantern that I want to try this year. It puts out good light without draining the batteries too fast, and it is compact. I only paid $5 for it on ebay.

Me too...especially if you are using the one lb propane bottles for your stove anyway. Coleman has these quick clip mantles now that eliminate having to tie on the old ones with you fat fingers. I have a couple and find them really nice on power outages (never happens in Juneau, you know) as well.

WE use both propaneon a 20lb bottle and battery when not hooked to shore power and still use the propane lantern some.

We have a Coleman propane double mantel and a Coleman rechargeable 2 florescent bulb lantern, just plug it in to recharge. We seem to forget the rechargeable one is with us since we enjoy the bright light from the propane lantern. If our battery in the tear were to die we could use the rechargeable one safely in the cabin. Danny

Does anyone know where I can get the Small Kerosene lanterns?? I know I can still buy the full size ones..10 -12" high.... but I want to get a hold of some about 6-8"high. They would look neat rigged up with 12 V.

I've got two gas Colemans that are just about all I use. I keep mine in those plastic cases and rarely change mantles, tho it doesn't bother me to do it anymore. I use regular unleaded in mine, much cheaper than the Coleman fuel and you can get it when you get gas, I just keep one of the empty fuel cans and reuse it.. I have one with clear glass and one with amber glass, we keep that one closest to where we are sitting and put the clear one 10-15' away, helps keep the bugs down. We also have one of the Coleman battery ones, I took that center white tube out of it that covers the bulb, much brighter that way, it pretty much only gets used for nite trips to the potty.

We've always had propane lanterns growing up. A couple years ago we visited my family and got stuck in FL due to a hurricane. Mom got lucky and scored a lantern and batteries. We wanted to conserve the batteries so we used the propane one. It was just too hot to use in the house so we switched to the flourecent lantern. It lasted a couple days.

I have Coleman 2 battery powered lanterns in the tear. They are the smaller ones (4D cells instead of 8Ds) that collapse down. I've been using them since before IRG and they have the same batteries.

For general light around the camp, I either use propane tiki torches or the ropelight attached to the EZ-up.
