Do fenders belong on a teardrop 5 1/2' wide?

Here's where we keep the polls, and anyone can start a poll!

Should I put fenders on a teardrop 5 1/2' wide, or tuck the wheels underneath?

Of course, it's only 7' wide across fenders

Do fenders belong on a teardrop 5 1/2' wide?

Postby mikeschn » Tue May 08, 2007 5:48 pm

Hey guys,

It's my turn for a poll.

Do fenders belong on a teardrop 5 1/2' wide?

(or should the wheels be tucked underneath?

I'm toying with two ideas, a 5 1/2' wide version of the Lil Diner, AND a 5 1/2' wide version of the Escape Hatch/Winter warrior. I need your thoughts...

8) Half fenders on the Lil diner and tuck the winter warrior.

I'm with Miriam... At least half fenders? And, I have no problem with full fenders. Methinks most TTTs and tears just look better with fenders. I never liked the look of Shasta's and other little campers with those little swoopie finder wells? They always looked kinda tipsy and unbalanced with the little wheels hidden under there. Just my oddball opinion. ;)

Hey Mike,

As everyone knows, I started with a boat trailer and that determined the width of my trailer. My wheels are set outboard (that's a boat pun...) of the walls and I think it still looks OK. It let me put a queen mattress in the trailer. On the other hand, it's W I D E behind my SUV.

If you can tuck them under you won't have to worry quite so much about staying right in the center of your lane.

You know...I kind of think it has to do with the design, and the proportions, the tow vehicle, and what just looks right!!!! I am simply amazed at the ability of the members of the board to use CAD to visualize and develop plans for the perfect Tear, just amazed!!! But I was kind of shocked when I took one of those designs that I liked, mocked it up, and plopped it behind my wife's Element, and then behind my Taurus. It simply did not look the same!!!!!

Boy....my answer didn't help!!!!

Hey Mike, you know better. Everyone has a different view and when it comes down to 'do I or don't I', you'll do it the way you think you'll like it when it is finished. :? So do them half in and half out like the Grumman.

Sometimes I just like to bounce the ideas off of you guys, to make sure I'm not missing something obvious (or not so obvious)

If your wife says so!! 8)
I'm doing a half -wide repro of the fenders I used on the 'Diners. Thanks Mike, for the drawing!
I'm building them up in foam/'glass.

The body is 80" wide, and with the demi-fenders, it will be just 84".
Wheels are inside the body, fenders are cosmetic!

The way I look at it is, if you want 5 1/2' wide why compromise the interior with wheel wells, it defeats the extra width. :) Danny

I like the looks of both. My TD is about 5 1/2' on a 4x8' trailer so I decided if
I don't need them why bother.

Mike,
I looked at the state (Indiana) rules. In Indiana, if you stay under 80" wide you don't need upper clearance lights. So for me it was no fenders, my trailer is 6' wide with no fenders. That's the way I did it.
