a VW TDI can pull a teardrop, and still get good mileage doing it. Mine is an automatic, gets around 33-35mpg normally, and 25ish mpg when towing my 1200 pound tear. if you get a stick, you'll get 45-47mpg normally.

No car payments so gas is always higher. Running around $3.40/gal. At least I'm not in G.B. @$10/gal.

Got 18 mpg out of the Ram this last tank. $65.00 worth of gas yesterday. I fill it up every 3 weeks.

I'm likely to get hung for this but...

Car payment(s) are higher by a long shot. Two different payments being made (2001 Dodge Van and 2003 Mazda Minivan). Gas expenses however are basically negligable. I filled the tank on the Van about a month ago. Prior to that, the last time it was filled was in the fall. My wife fills the Minivan and I don't know how often it's filled. Most of my driving is handled with a 50mpg 250cc motorcycle and I don't even fill THAT very often.

It all comes from living in a small (but not tiny) town. My office is 1.1 miles from home (on the odometer), ALL significant shopping/resturants/etc are no more than 5 minutes away. The only reason we leave town is for movies (Our moron mayor shoved the only theatre out of business). As a result, the majority (vast majority actually) of our gas usage/car miles are used on camping trips and 2 or 3 trips a year to visit my mom (350 miles away).

wow I am suprised at all the tdi owners with teardrops.
I too have a 03 tdi gets 43mpg about 38 towing the td.
payments are definitly higher ..car will be paid off in march.
costa about 40 bucks to fill it but only twice a month.
I am going to try to keep this car for awhile but
we will see..diesels tend to last longer than gassers but the
rest of the car is the same as a regular vw golf..

Nissy 1995 -- paid for (Nissan hardbody)... Like Geron.
Great little truck and I think it is good for another 100,000 miles.
Just sold a '97 Geo that got 47 mpg... Prolly shoulds kept it?
But, I find a deal on something little and cute like a Miata convert or whatever?
I buy used and pay cash... have been for many years.
Most of the time I ride the scooter... 45 mpg is just fine with me.

My cars and trucks are paid for so it is certainly my gas payments especially here in Europe. Luckily in Luxembourg we have the cheapest rate of all European countries so I only pay $ 6.75/gallon. In Germany for example people pay $ 8.1/gallon. (These are the prices for high octane gasoline).

I know this is an old thread but Just before the Florida trip 4 weeks ago we did the unthinkable. I traded in my 2 Dodge vans for momma's new
( well 05 Scion). I then sold the Dakota outright and bought a Suzuki Esteem ( Hell I never heard of them either ). I bought it from a buddy.
It ran great and was comfortable inside for this fat man
(after I got it put on).
The Scion is 35mpg highway and the suzuki has an overall average on 4 tanks of fuel of 46.8 mpg overall driving. I just went from $360 a month to $90 on just my trips to work.

I felt so unamerican giving up on the U.S. Auto makers but there is a point you gotta say enough and we were there. We drive 90 miles a day combined and almost couldn't afford to work anymore something had to give.

I still want an electric vehicle thought .......

I have spent over $200 just this week at the pump, If my payment was higher than my gas I would have to be driving some sort of high prices exotic car.

I work as a field tech and cover 2.5 states, drove over 1400 miles in the last 3 days.

The bike in that picture should be called a "Suicide Bike"! One would have to be very careful of where the safety valve is letting out its steam!

Good One! :D
