I don't have no stinking accent!!

That "...that strip of grass ...." y'all keep alluding to....here in Jawja we call it.....(Wait for it!) .........grass.

I live in Australia. I don't have have an accent. The only people that I met who had an accent were in the USA when I lived there for almost seven years.

I had a friend that was from Illinois and we would go vist thier family up there. Most of the time the friend would be the "translator" between me and the family. I guess I talked to slow and with to much twang. It was funny watching them squint thier eyes and go huh.

I'm a Hoosier, and I have a Hoosier accent, with a bit of Northwestern KY mixed in from living in Southern Indiana for about 4 years. And then there was that 3 years in the mid 80's when I lived in Central NJ and Eastern Pa--lots of different accents there to pick up in my speech, although that was accidental.

So, I just talk and most people understand!!

When I first moved to Cincinnati over 30 years ago, a woman came up to me with a thick Bluegrass accent and asked where I was from because I sounded funny. Got here via round trip of the mid-west : eastern Ohio, central Ohio (Appalachia starts at Broad St in Columbus), downstate Illinois, Chicago, Northern Wisconsin, Pittsburgh to SW Ohio. I have to work hard to avoid dropping the final "g" like Obama does.

One of my daughters is a speech pathologist. She said, "We don't correct for dialect unless asked." She did a lot of her clinical work teaching (mostly Asian) professionals to alter their speech so they can be better understood locally.

Sounds a little Southern and a little Western, most of the time.

I have the best accent in the world, I was told this when I was in the US. I come from the south, a long way south, even south of the Equator. I come from the great land called "Down Under" where we speak true Strine as found in the outback and away from the cities. True Strine is not spoken in the cities but rather a combination of foreign languages that have no meaning or understanding is found there. There is no other accent like ours, even the Kiwis can't copy us. If you travel from the Eastern side of my country across to the Western side and from North to South, you will find that we all speak with the same accent, the best accent in the world.

There is still a bit of extra G left over from Long Island, but I mostly have a Dan Rather or Harry Reasnor news castor accent now.

I guess if you read it just like I spelled it you would sound sorta southern like me and yess I can sound like those southern ladies from gone with the wind. Y (read as the letter Y) Yeass (sounds like a snake sssssss) I cud.

You need a "Cajun" category. "Southern" don't cut it

21 years in Nor Cal and I was oblivious that I had an accent. Moved to CO and was constantly called on it. Still couldn't tell they had accents. Now living two decades in a multi-cultural southwest environment I'm just... like... totally... a mess... fur sure! (Thank heavens my kids got their father's talent for languages.)
