Did you buy or build

Postby Shadow Catcher » Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:17 pm

Based on observation it would seem that more folks build than buy?
My speculation is that this is based mostly on the observation of builds (the squeaky wheel thing).

For clarification per Sharon, I meant completed tear or standy or... as in Camp-Inn or Mega-Mini or LittleGuy... I woulds consider a chassis as a part of a trailer.

I had to think about this before voting. I bought my first TD (Little Guy) and built my current one (CaseyKraft).

So, I voted "built" because it refers to my current TD.

I'm sure everyone is glad that I clarified that. ;)

I built him. <sic>

No, but seriously, I wouldn't have a problem doing another TD on a "bought" trailer-frame instead of building one.

Also, the prices of the Little guys from Camping world are such that I believe they are a bargain for anyone considering owning a TD, but doesn't have the time/inclination to build one themselves...

I bought mine. I also don't have the wherewithall to build one. Mine would probably end up with three wheels.

#1 bought the frame , built the trailer

#2 built the frame , built the trailer

#3 bought the frame , built the trailer

#4 stole the frame out from under #1 and built the trailer

Before the teardrop crave hit ................

old history cut down 2 different ford trucks for utility trailers

bought an existing 14' standie for $100.00 and did nothing to it just camped in it. It's still in good condition in the back yard.

Needed a large flat bed so bought a 24' wrecked camper frame and added a bed of 3/4 treated plywood and used it for a mini barn toter.
This one hasn't mover for a while now , it may be the next major project

Sorry, but I have a problem understanding this; so, maybe others do too. This could be why there have been only a few people answering your poll.

When you are asking if you bought your trailer, it could mean the rolling chassis or the whole TD/TTT because both are simply called "trailer". It would be good if you could clarify what you mean for folks. I'm thinking you mean the rolling chassis portion. If that is so:

People who purchased the Harbor Freight one probably bought a "kit" and put it together themselves.

People who purchased a Northern Trailer may have bought a "kit" or they may have elected to have the company put it together and buy it that way.

People who purchased a Red Trailer may have done the same as with Northern Trailer.

People who elected to make a rolling chassis may have had part of the work done by a professional and I don't know where that would fall in the poll.

Then, there are those who bought an entire unit, rolling chassis and cabin, also called a trailer, i.e. a Little Guy, Wazat, Raindrop, etc or a previously built unit, which may or may not have been professionally built.

I bought a Red Trailer "kit" and put it together myself and am proceeding from there; so, I answered “kitâ€

We went through this a while back and at least some of us came to the conclusion that on a "Builders Board" for Trailers results would have one outcome.

But that if the same question were asked on a "Camping Board" for Trailers it may have a totally different outcome.

Certainly a poll like this would give good results for this board. But there is a bigger Trailer/Camping world out there.

Happy Trails

"I" bought my 2005 Little Guy as a salvge deal. The body BROKE away from the frame and the galley section was destroyed.
I completely gutted the trailer and BUILT the interior the way "I" wanted it. I removed the cheesey carpet from the walls and floor and replace dit with WOOD !
No more galley and the interior is finished with wood and I installed lights and a shelf at the head of the trailer. Since I use the trailer for VW shows AND fer campin, I also installed 1/2 in. bamboo floorin. Shows very nicely !
So...i guess I did BOTH...bought AND built.
