Most expensive item in your build

Postby dh » Fri May 07, 2010 10:35 pm

OK, so what was (or will be) the single most expensive item in your build?

Mine is the 12volt, 12" flat pannel LCD TV/DVD combo.

I had most of the wood, and I got some great prices on the plywood., but for me it was the hardware. The door handles (3), and the windows were the main expense. So the choice for me would have to be other. I think I spent about 500 to 600$ in materials. The CPES wasn't cheap, but makes sense to protect the woody.

Had to vote for windows, as there was no door option. I have the prefabricated tinted glass door/window combos. Bought 2 of them... not cheap! About a 1/3rd of my budget

The fenders were the most costly.Shipping to Canada is just about the same price as Grant's fenders.

Definitely the fenders. The skin was expensive once added up (fenders still cost more), but I didn't have to buy it all at once.

 Mine would have to be the total of the 2 plastic piano hinges I bought. Yes 2  I cut the first one wrong and had to by another one and when the camper is 6'6" wide they aren't cheap.
About everything else was found including the trailer that came off a pop up that was given to me.

I voted for windows..I first thought the trailer may be the most expensive item, and it was the most expensive single item at $280.

But, the windows for the sides are $117 each (need two), and the window for the top section is $95. The freight will be about $75, so $404 trumps $280.

I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing...

might be aluniom trim for me. I am still burning though it. It gets pricy at 20 to 25 a wack for flat bar stock. the inch and a half angle though is more at 37 a wack. I used a lot of it. other than that probaly my moon roof. the axles and wheels were savalged for nothing. the most pricest thing was probaly my harbor freight trailer kit. My door was found at my local land fill. my plywood was salvaged as was most my wood.

I think I am going to vote for my brakes as most pricest. My stove windows was not bad ebay and they ran about half or a third as what the rv stores wanted on ebay. Over all I got a lot of cheap deals and really got the trailer for a big discount on all the building materels supension and appliances. You just have to be resoucrseful and forget the brand new rv store price or the brand new trailer part store price. Hit ebay most of my great deals came from it. Get savalged wood not real hard to build one of these teardrops with lack of cash or on a tight budget. any one can do it. this is not a big pricey Rv. My thoughts Slowcowboy. Teardrops are meant and designed for the common broke man and the do it your self guy. Drive up to a brand new rv and gloat as you know yours if owned free and clear and his is on big payments. Gloat as you fill just the normal amount of gas in your cars tank as he pours it in at 45 gallons a time. or desil at 3 a 11. and gloat as you drive by at the next town as he stops for more gas or desil and you keep going 300 or so miles still rving on fumes. Slowcowboy.
Plans. there was supposed to be plans to be followed when I built this thing. Opps! AH, gee, tum,tee tum. I think I forgot about the plans 2 years ago. ------Tow vehicles, 1995 ford explore, 1994 ford ranger, 1993 ford F-150, 2009 4x9 Off road teardrop, on harbor freight greatly modified frame.

My most expensive item(s) may have been everything I screwed up and had to replace/redo.
