I voted for propane but...
We have the Camp Chef stove/oven combination and a Camp Chef fire ring so we carry two 5# propane bottles to feed both appliances.
Campfires & charcoal fires are restricted in Yosemite to only 5pm to 10 pm but propane has no restrictions.
We can dutch oven in the propane oven without breaking any rules.

A word of warning don't ever pour white gas on a fire you think is out.
I did such as a teen and singed my eyebrows. I can still see that ball of fire in my memory.
My mom came to my aid since she heard this explosion in the family back yard fireplace.

Even though I've had scary experiences with white gas in my younger years (flaming Coleman stove my parents gifted me) I've abandoned the propane lantern for a couple white gas vintage Coleman lanterns.
I really enjoy the look, sound and light output they provide. Something to play around with  when Jane is playing her harp.
We still carry a few 1# bottles of propane for a quick meal vs hauling out the bigger tank.
I fill up both lanterns for our trip and leave the gas can at home, for safety sake. :frightened:

I am well used to ether propane or white gas. being a coleman collector. its fun to light up a white gas lantern and forget to heat up the genartor at times.

being a fomer propane truck driver. I am fully used to propane.

like doug said there is really nothing more safer or more dangurous on white gas than propane.

its all in comon sense and the danger is in the guy operating it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I re-fill all my little green cans and have not bought a green coleman can in 10 years.

I even re-fill my barbaque bottles off my house propane storage tank.

nothing to it and no more dangrous than re-filling a green coleman can.

I starte re-filling barbauqe bottles off a house storage tank on a ranch job years ago and am well used to it.

white gas is not a heck of a lot diffent it and propane can both cause flames.

I use when camping what ever hits the mood. white gas on a old made in america 1970s or older stove does burn hotter than proprane.

the main burner on a old coleman white gas stove the suit case types. will heat a kettle of water faster hands down than any made in chine modern propane stove.

my thoughts.

danny. if you want to pack extra white gas along do like i do. its a big pain in the butt to fill a coleman lantern from a tin gallon can of the stuff. I pour my white gas into a red plastic portalble fuel bottle. the ones bought in the sporting goods stores for back packers.

they hold enough for one re-fill on most lanterns and are a lot easer to pour from than a gallon can.

I pack a bottle or two of this in the form of the portable fuel bottles.

Thanks for the tip Slow but so far I haven't run out of gas during a trip with my lanterns.
If I do run out, they sell it in handy plastic bottles at Walmart and other stores that I can save & re fill.
I understand it's illegal to cross state lines with refilled disposable bottles of propane so I don't refill them. :D Danny

danny. I don't think theres a way a cop can tell if you re-filled that bottle or bought it. they all look the same. and for me its just another epa law that is not top of the line with enforcement now days.

most cops are not going to pull you over for speeding than go back and demand you open your teardrops hatch and check thing out then if they pick up a green can how can they tell if you bought it or re-filled it?????????

its just one of them things that is so stupid. that if your doing the speed limet and theres no cause to stop you with working head taillights and curent license plates.

no cop in his right mind is going to stop and pull a teardrop over to see if the bottles are re-filed.

when you re- fill them they look just like a store bought one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

theres no possible way to prove you re-filled it.

if it bothers you take a barbaque bottle along.

me I don't even blink or think about it.

what I would do is buy one new one and get the cap. then leave one re-filled one hooked up to your stove. thats enough gas for a trip.

then just use re-filled bottles and keep the new ones cap and keep trading it out to your spare bottle. theres then no possible way to tell if the bottles are re-filled.

Slow, Since I'm no expert or official as to the "Why" so I'll give them the benefit of doubt that their must be a reason for laws like this.
To pick and choose what laws to abide by or to ignore will sooner or later (the latter) come back and bite us in the back side.

I have no interest in refilling one, I can afford a new bottle .
It's a non issue with me.
I'm not going to risk life or property for a few dollars.
Just my opinion. :D Danny
