Your galley is it the way you want it

Postby Ron Dickey » Sun Jan 13, 2013 10:41 pm

I have seen hundreds of galleys and have see people that make 2nd and 3 build and the galley is a little different in each.

This is a two fold question

1. are you happy with it or want to change it.
see poll.
Note you can pick one or all!!

if you think it is just as you want can you use only #2 and tell us why.

2. if you want to change it how and can you include a pix of it.

I Set it so you can change your vote.

I have no galley in my present trailer. we set up a coleman screened in tent. The disadvantage for that is we can not stop by the road and just open the back and get lunch and we have to set up and take down the kitchen.
I always wanted to have a pickup with the restroom and shower on the bed. Now I am working on a new build that will have a galley, and simplify our lives.
Every-One has a better idea then everyone else!!

I want to build a set of about 3" tall drawers that will extend side to side, under the microwave for utensils and silverware/plastic ware. I keep it all in a Rubbermaid tub right now and it takes so long to find exactly what I want. I also would like to build a cabinet on the right side to put the "redneck" water heater in, along with a place to store spare 1 lb propane cylinders securely.

I've already cut the fold-up countertop in front of the microwave and put in a piano hinge, so I can get to the storage space below without moving the microwave. This has definitely helped with the organization.

And, the cabinet door doesn't really help me that much. I could make better use of the cabinet storage in the cabin if I moved the galley cabinet door inside.

(Ignore the mess...I had just finished putting the piano hinge in and I hadn't cleaned up my tools  )

This is tear #2 for us and Nancy was the one who designed the cabinetry in the galley. There are only two changes we wish to make, the most important is the upper cabinet doors need a latch as we find that when bounced around occasionally will allow things to fall out. 100406

The other change is that the power/control panel is crowded and a bit disorganized 100410 This is not a big problem and may or may not be changed.

Love my galley. Monly thing to do differently is tambor or roll up doors instead of sliders on the back cabinets. But the sliders are still better tnan regular doors

Man, Ron! Thats quite the list! I'm pretty happy with my galley, mainly because its very utilitarian. Its not bogged down with cabinets that add weight and limit storage. But you did catch the wind-guard thing. I'm planning on creating side panels from marine vinyl that snap in position, just like my roof.

My simple galley works perfect for me... and whenever I decide to sell the trailer, the new owner will have a blank slate.

I made a full sized layout to avoid any mistakes.
No need to make any modifications. ;)

Yep, I'm happy with my galley. Made a lot of 'paper dolls' and thought things out (like what would I change later), made the corrections before I finalized. The key to a good galley is to take your time and think things out.

Since my galley is the original built into the trailer when it was built 65 years ago, I have a number of issues. But since it's all riveted in place, through the side walls of the trailer, I am not interested in doing the amount of work necessary to change it.

I'd really like to rip it out and start afresh, but until I design and build my own trailer, I'll live with what I've got.

I'm pretty happy with my galley.

I would only change one thing. I would move my electrical box from the pull out on the lower left to the upper left cabinet. A very minor thing. Other than that, I'm good!

I was not sure what a tambor door was till now seems it would be cheeper to glue wood to cloth or buy one you can cut down.

Looks cool to make but the amount of Jigs as well as set up makes it too expensive.
